What Exactly Is El Niño?
El Niño is one phase of a natural climate cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Think of it as a massive release of heat from the ocean into the atmosphere. It begins with the unusual warming of the sea surface in the central and eastern
tropical Pacific Ocean. This oceanic warmth affects atmospheric pressure and alters wind and rainfall patterns globally. During an El Niño event, the normal east-to-west trade winds weaken or even reverse, causing the warm water that is usually pooled in the western Pacific to slosh back eastward, towards the coast of South America. This shift has a domino effect, disrupting weather systems far and wide, often leading to droughts in some regions and heavy floods in others.
A Rapidly Strengthening Event
The current El Niño is not just present; it's intensifying at a notable pace. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this event is expected to become a strong one through the August to October 2026 period. Forecasts indicate a very high probability that it will persist into the spring of 2027. Scientists have been tracking the steady increase in sea surface temperatures, which began rising in early 2026 and have continued to climb. There is now a strong consensus, with an 81% chance cited by NOAA, that this could become a 'very strong' El Niño by the end of the year, a category reserved for the most impactful events.
The Global Heat Connection
El Niño's primary global signature is heat. By transferring warmth from the Pacific Ocean to the atmosphere, it gives a temporary boost to average global temperatures. This effect is layered on top of the long-term warming trend caused by climate change. The WMO has forecast a high likelihood of above-normal temperatures for most land areas worldwide in the coming months. This means that recent heatwaves could be a prelude to an even more extended period of warmth. While 2026 is already on track to be one of the hottest years recorded, the full impact of this El Niño might push global temperatures into record-breaking territory, with many scientists agreeing that 2027 is almost certain to set a new global heat record.
What This Means For India
For India, the most significant impact of El Niño is often on the southwest monsoon. Historically, strong El Niño events are linked to suppressed rainfall, increasing the risk of drought. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already forecast the possibility of below-normal rainfall for the second half of the monsoon season in 2026. After intensifying from weak to moderate conditions in July, the El Niño is expected to strengthen further, which could disrupt the delicate balance of the monsoon. This can have cascading effects on agriculture by affecting sowing calendars, straining water reservoirs, and impacting crop yields. Compounding the issue, a concurrent positive Indian Ocean Dipole—a separate climate pattern—is also forecast, which can further amplify regional climate impacts.
Preparing for Widespread Impacts
The combination of background warming and a strong El Niño creates a recipe for more frequent and intense extreme weather. While India may face the risk of reduced overall rainfall, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of damaging local floods within a drier season. The erratic nature of the monsoon this year has already shown this pattern, with periods of deficit followed by intense downpours in certain areas. The coming months will require careful monitoring of weather patterns to manage water resources, safeguard agricultural output, and prepare for potential health stresses from prolonged heat. Global organisations are stressing that this forecast provides a critical window for governments and communities to prepare for the likely impacts on everything from farming to public health.
