A Festive Flavour in Every Cup
During Durga Puja, which in 2026 runs from October 16th to the 21st, the air in Bengal is thick with excitement, tradition, and the aroma of festive foods. This year, a new scent has joined the mix: a Pujo-themed menu from Starbucks. Running from late
September through the end of the festival, the limited-edition offerings are available across select stores in Kolkata and other parts of the region. The campaign, aptly named “Aamar Pujo, Aamar Starbucks” (My Puja, My Starbucks), is the company’s attempt to weave itself into the cultural fabric of one of India’s most significant festivals. It’s a move that shows how major international brands are looking for more meaningful ways to connect with local consumers beyond just standard advertising.
What's on the Pujo-Inspired Menu?
The menu itself is a fascinating fusion of classic Bengali tastes and contemporary cafe culture. It features a range of savoury and sweet items designed to evoke a sense of culinary nostalgia. New additions for 2026 include the Kosha Mangsho Roll, which reimagines the iconic slow-cooked mutton dish as a convenient snack. It joins returning favourites like the Bhetki Bhaja Sandwich, Chingri (Prawn) Turnover, and the vegetarian Aloo Posto Burger, which blends the comforting flavours of poppy seed and potato. For those with a sweet tooth, the menu offers a Gurer Sandesh Flan and a Kalakand Pie, modern twists on beloved Bengali sweets. The beverage selection also gets a festive update, with drinks like the Saffron Latte and Choco Saffron Frappuccino adding a touch of festive indulgence.
More Than Just a Marketing Strategy
While launching a festive menu is undoubtedly a smart business move, it represents a deeper trend in the Indian market. Brands are recognizing that to succeed, they must do more than just sell a product; they need to become part of the consumer's life and celebrations. Mitali Maheshwari, Head of Product and Marketing at TATA Starbucks, noted that the menu is a way to mark the occasion with flavours that are deeply rooted in the region. This strategy, often called 'glocalization', allows a global brand like Starbucks to build a stronger emotional connection in a specific locale. During Durga Puja, when food is central to the celebration, offering familiar flavours in a new format is a powerful way to participate in the collective festive spirit.
The Local Reaction
The launch has generated considerable buzz online, with images of the menu's billboard quickly going viral. Reactions have been a mix of surprise, curiosity, and appreciation. Many see it as a welcome sign of a global company making a genuine effort to understand and celebrate local culture. Author Hindol Sengupta shared his approval on social media, stating, “Indian customers love what they love and every brand finally bends to their will.” This sentiment reflects a broader trend where consumers expect brands to acknowledge and respect regional tastes. While some may view it as a clever marketing ploy, the overall feeling is that such initiatives make the festive season more vibrant and inclusive, blending the traditional with the contemporary.
