What is Current Booking?
Current Booking is a facility provided by IRCTC that allows passengers to book train tickets after the first reservation chart has been prepared. This chart is typically prepared several hours before a train's departure. The system identifies all the seats
that remain vacant due to cancellations or those that were never booked under any quota. These available seats are then offered to passengers on a first-come, first-served basis. The booking window for current tickets usually opens after the first chart is prepared and closes about 30 minutes before the train is scheduled to depart, which is when the final chart is made. This service can be accessed both online through the IRCTC website and app, as well as at physical reservation counters at major railway stations.
The 'Confirmed Tickets Only' Guarantee
The most significant advantage of the current booking system is its promise of certainty. Unlike regular or Tatkal bookings, which can result in a Waitlisted (WL) or Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) status, current booking exclusively offers confirmed tickets. This is because the process begins only after the railway's charting system has allocated seats to all waitlisted and RAC passengers. Any seats that remain are verifiably empty. Therefore, when you book a ticket through the 'CURR_AVBL' (Current Available) option, you are guaranteed a specific coach and berth number, removing all guesswork and anxiety from your last-minute travel plans.
How to Book a Current Ticket Online
Booking a current ticket is a straightforward process, almost identical to a regular booking. First, log in to the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. Enter your departure and destination stations, along with the date of your journey. When you search for trains, the system will display the availability status. If the first chart has been prepared and there are vacant seats, the status for that train and class will show as 'CURR_AVBL' along with the number of available seats. You can then proceed by entering passenger details and completing the payment as you normally would. Upon successful booking, you will receive a confirmed e-ticket with your coach and seat numbers instantly.
Current Booking vs. Tatkal: Key Differences
Many travellers confuse current booking with the Tatkal scheme, but they are fundamentally different. The Tatkal quota opens for booking one day in advance of the journey at a specific time (10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for non-AC). It comes with an additional premium charge. In contrast, current booking opens only after the first chart is prepared, typically a few hours before departure, and involves no extra fees. In fact, fares under current booking can sometimes be offered with a discount on the base fare to encourage filling empty seats. While Tatkal is a planned attempt at securing a last-minute ticket a day ahead, current booking is a final check for any seats that have become free just before the journey begins.
Important Rules to Remember
While current booking is a fantastic option, there are a few rules to keep in mind. Tickets booked under this facility are e-tickets and cannot be cancelled for a refund, though a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) can be filed under specific circumstances, such as the train being cancelled. Furthermore, modifications like changing the boarding point or altering passenger details (name, age, or gender) are not permitted on a PNR generated through current booking. The facility is available for all classes of travel, and standard concession rules, such as those for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, are applicable.
