What Is the New Token System?
The new arrangement replaces the traditional, often chaotic, first-come-first-served queues with a more organised, token-based appointment system. Passengers wishing to book a Tatkal ticket at a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter must now first obtain
a numbered token. This token determines their place in the queue. Instead of waiting for hours, passengers can leave and return when their token number is called to complete the booking. The crucial change is that to receive this token, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID. This system applies only to offline bookings at reservation counters and does not affect online bookings via the IRCTC website or app.
Why This Change Aims to Stop Touts
The primary reason for this new system is to combat the persistent problem of touts and unauthorised agents. For years, touts have exploited the system by hiring people to stand in queues for hours, cornering a large number of Tatkal tickets as soon as the window opens. These tickets are then sold illegally at exorbitant prices to desperate travellers. By requiring a valid photo ID just to get a token, the railways aim to ensure that only genuine passengers or their immediate family members can enter the queue. The tokens themselves are non-transferable, meaning they can only be used by the person to whom they were issued, adding another layer of security. This move is part of a broader crackdown on illegal ticketing, which has also included deploying AI, deactivating suspicious online accounts, and tightening cancellation rules.
Your Step-by-Step Guide at the Counter
Navigating the new system is straightforward if you're prepared. Here’s what the process looks like: 1. Visit the railway reservation counter during the specified token distribution window, which is before the actual Tatkal booking begins. 2. Present your valid photo ID to the railway official to receive a numbered token. 3. You can then leave the queue and wait for your token number to be announced or displayed. 4. Once your number is called, approach the counter with your completed reservation form and the original photo ID of at least one of the travelling passengers, as has always been required for the final booking. 5. Complete the payment to receive your ticket.
Token Timings and Priority Categories
The token distribution is timed to happen just before the official Tatkal booking starts. For AC class tickets, tokens are typically distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, with booking commencing at 10:00 AM. For non-AC classes, tokens are given out between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM for bookings that start at 11:00 AM. The system also introduces priority categories. 'Category A' is for passengers booking for themselves or their family, who get first preference. 'Category B' is for all other requests. Initially, each counter will issue a limited number of tokens, such as 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC, though this can be adjusted based on demand. If seats remain after all token-holders are served, walk-in bookings will be permitted.
The Essential Photo ID Checklist
Being prepared with the right documents is now more important than ever. To get a token and to book the ticket, you will need to present a valid original photo ID. Photocopies are generally not accepted for this process. The accepted documents include: - Aadhaar Card - Voter Photo ID Card - Passport - Driving Licence - PAN Card - Student ID card with a photograph from a recognised institution - Nationalised Bank Passbook with a photograph - Any photo identity card with a serial number issued by a Central or State Government authority.
