Pain in pets is generally categorized into two types: acute and chronic. Acute pain is sharp, sudden, and typically results from a specific event like an injury, surgery, or infection. It serves a biological purpose, warning the body to protect itself during healing. However, if this acute pain isn't addressed promptly, it can evolve. Chronic pain is different; it's a persistent discomfort that lasts for weeks, months, or even years, often stemming from long-term conditions like arthritis, dental disease, or nerve damage. Unlike acute pain, chronic pain serves no useful biological function and becomes a disease in itself, altering the nervous system and diminishing quality of life. Many owners mistake the subtle signs of chronic pain—like stiffness or a general slowing down—as just a normal part of ageing.
The High Cost of Waiting
Ignoring or failing to notice the early signs of pain can have serious consequences. Untreated discomfort can lead to a host of other problems. Physiologically, it can delay wound healing, suppress the immune system, and increase stress on the heart and lungs. Behaviourally, it can cause long-term changes, such as fearfulness, touch-avoidance, or pain-induced aggression that can persist even after the original issue is treated. What might start as a manageable problem can become much more complex and difficult to treat as the body's pain pathways change. Ultimately, delaying a veterinary visit not only prolongs your pet's suffering but can also lead to more expensive and invasive treatments down the line. It is far easier and more effective to prevent pain or treat it early than to chase it once it has become established.
What a Veterinary Pain Assessment Involves
A trip to the vet is a collaborative process. Since you know your pet best, your observations about changes in their behaviour are a vital part of the assessment. A veterinarian will perform a thorough physical exam, looking for stiffness, tenderness, or a reaction to touch. They will also consider pain the fourth or fifth vital sign, alongside temperature, pulse, and respiration. To get a more objective measure, they may use a standardised pain scale, which scores various behaviours and responses to help quantify the level of discomfort. Depending on the initial findings, your vet might recommend further diagnostic tools like X-rays or lab work to pinpoint the underlying cause. This comprehensive approach ensures that the treatment plan is tailored specifically to your pet’s needs.
Modern Pathways to Relief
The good news is that modern veterinary medicine offers a wide array of effective pain management strategies. For many conditions, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) specifically formulated for pets can provide significant relief. In more severe cases, other medications like opioids may be used. But treatment doesn't stop with pharmaceuticals. There is a growing emphasis on holistic and non-drug therapies that can be used alongside traditional medicine. These include physical therapy to improve mobility, laser therapy to reduce inflammation and promote healing, and even acupuncture to stimulate the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms. The goal is a multi-modal approach, combining different treatments to provide the most comprehensive relief possible.
