Fennel and Cardamom Infusion
A staple in many Indian households, fennel seed (saunf) water is a gentle yet powerful cooling agent. According to Ayurveda, fennel has a 'Sheeta Virya' or cooling potency that helps pacify internal body heat, making it perfect for hot weather. It’s also
a fantastic digestive aid, known to reduce bloating and soothe the stomach after meals. To prepare, simply soak a tablespoon of fennel seeds in a litre of water overnight. In the morning, strain the water and sip it throughout the day. For an extra layer of flavour and digestive benefit, add a few lightly crushed green cardamom pods to the infusion. The aromatic cardamom complements the sweet, anise-like flavour of the fennel, creating a sophisticated and calming drink that’s both hydrating and balancing.
Hibiscus and Rose Iced Tea
Vibrant, tangy, and deeply refreshing, hibiscus tea is celebrated globally for its cooling properties. Often called 'karkade' in some parts of the world, this crimson-hued drink is made from the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower and is naturally caffeine-free. Studies and traditional use suggest it helps lower body temperature, making it a go-to beverage in warm climates. It is also packed with antioxidants. To make a beautiful botanical brew, steep a few dried hibiscus flowers in hot water for about five to ten minutes. Let it cool completely, then pour over ice. Add a splash of rose water for a floral aroma and a hint of sweetness from a natural sweetener like honey or jaggery if desired. The result is a jewel-toned iced tea that’s as beautiful as it is beneficial.
Lemongrass and Holy Basil (Tulsi) Elixir
This aromatic blend is a powerhouse of wellness. Lemongrass is traditionally used to aid digestion, reduce bloating, and promote relaxation. Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is a revered adaptogenic herb in Ayurveda, known for helping the body manage stress and supporting the immune system. Together, they create a calming, citrusy-herbal drink that can be enjoyed hot or cold. To prepare, gently bruise a stalk of lemongrass to release its oils and combine it with a handful of fresh Tulsi leaves in a pot of water. Bring it to a gentle simmer for about 5-10 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it steep further. Strain and serve warm as a soothing tea, or chill it for a uniquely refreshing drink that invigorates the senses and calms the mind.
Cucumber and Mint Refresher
There’s a reason this combination is a spa-day classic: it’s the ultimate cooling tonic. Cucumber is about 96% water, making it incredibly hydrating on its own. When infused in water, it imparts a subtle, fresh flavour. Mint adds a further cooling sensation and is known to soothe the stomach. This drink is perhaps the easiest to prepare. Simply add a few slices of fresh cucumber and a handful of mint leaves to a pitcher of cold water. For an extra zing, add a squeeze of lime or lemon juice, which also provides a dose of Vitamin C. Let it infuse in the refrigerator for at least an hour to allow the flavours to meld. It’s a simple, elegant, and incredibly effective way to enhance your daily water intake and stay cool from the inside out.
Amla and Coriander Power Shot
For a potent boost of nutrients, turn to this green powerhouse. Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports immunity and skin health. Coriander leaves, known as dhaniya, are also rich in antioxidants and have been traditionally used for their detoxifying properties. This combination creates a cleansing drink that helps flush out toxins and supports overall wellness. To make it, blend a chopped amla (seed removed) with a handful of fresh coriander leaves, a small piece of ginger, and a cup of water. Strain the mixture and add a pinch of black salt for taste. While it has a strong, tangy flavour, this juice is an excellent way to start your day, especially on an empty stomach, to aid digestion and clear your system.
