What the New Study Found
A recent US study published in July 2026 has caught the attention of health experts and families managing asthma. Researchers in Ohio provided electric induction stoves to 72 households where at least one person had poorly controlled asthma and had previously
used a gas stove. The results were striking. After switching, participants reported significant improvements. On a recognised asthma control scale, the average score improved from 2.6 (moderate) to 1.5 (mild). There was a reported 70% drop in emergency room visits and hospital admissions for asthma, and an 80% reduction in days missed from work or school. The study also measured indoor air quality, finding that levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a lung irritant released by gas stoves, fell by an average of 70% after the switch.
The Critical Caveat: Why Experts Urge Caution
Despite the promising results, the study's lead researchers are the first to highlight its limitations. The project was originally designed for 1,200 households but was scaled back significantly, resulting in a small sample size of just over 70 homes. Crucially, the study did not include a control group—a separate group of households that continued using gas stoves for comparison. This makes it difficult to rule out other factors, including the placebo effect, where participants' symptoms improve simply because they are part of a study and expect to feel better. Professor Ash Sehgal, the project's leader, stated that the improvement was larger than that seen with some placebo drugs, but he and other experts agree that a larger, randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm the findings and prove a direct causal link.
The Indian Kitchen: A Different Context
While the Ohio study focused on switching from gas to electric, the conversation around cooking fuels in India is often different. Here, the major public health battle has been against indoor air pollution from traditional biomass stoves, or chulhas, which burn wood, dung cakes, or crop residue. This type of fuel is a primary source of household air pollution, which is linked to millions of premature deaths globally and is a major risk factor for respiratory illnesses, including acute respiratory infections in children. Government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) have significantly increased access to cleaner Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Studies have shown that moving from biomass to LPG dramatically reduces indoor particulate matter and improves lung function, although affordability and consistent use of LPG remain challenges.
Understanding the Enemy: Household Air Pollution
Household air pollution is a silent threat. Gas stoves release nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can penetrate deep into the lungs and irritate the respiratory system, triggering asthma attacks. The risk is amplified in homes with poor ventilation.
