The Core of the Research
A recent US study set out to answer a critical question: can switching from a gas stove to an electric one reduce asthma symptoms? Researchers from the MetroHealth System in Ohio, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, focused on 85 adults
and children with poorly controlled asthma. The participants' symptoms, medication use, and activity levels were tracked for several weeks before their existing gas stoves were replaced with new electric induction models at no cost. The same data was then collected for a few months after the switch to see what, if anything, had changed.
Striking and Unexpected Results
The findings were more dramatic than the researchers anticipated. Professor Ash Sehgal, the study's leader, noted that the improvements were similar to or even greater than those seen in clinical trials for common asthma medications. On average, participants' asthma control scores improved substantially, moving from what is considered 'moderate' to 'mild' symptoms. Specifically, there was a 70% drop in emergency room visits and hospitalisations for asthma. The number of days missed from work or school due to asthma flare-ups fell by approximately 80%. Participants also reported less wheezing, reduced shortness of breath, and less frequent need for their reliever inhalers.
The Science Behind the Stove
The key culprit appears to be nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a pollutant released when natural gas is burned. This gas is a known lung irritant that can trigger or worsen asthma. To confirm this link, researchers placed air quality monitors in dozens of the participants' homes. They found that after swapping the gas stoves for electric ones, the average level of nitrogen dioxide in the kitchen air dropped by a remarkable 70%. Previous research has consistently linked gas stove emissions to an increased risk of asthma in children, with one study from RMI suggesting nearly 13% of childhood asthma cases in the US could be associated with gas stove use, a risk profile similar to that of secondhand smoke.
What Pollutants Are We Talking About?
Nitrogen dioxide is not the only concern. Gas stoves also emit other pollutants, including carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde and benzene, both of which are known carcinogens. A 2024 study found that NO2 levels from gas stoves in US homes can exceed the short-term exposure levels deemed safe by the World Health Organization and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Experts note that these pollutants don't just stay in the kitchen; they can spread throughout the home, leading to prolonged exposure. This is a particular concern in smaller homes, where pollutants can concentrate more quickly.
What This Means For Your Home
While the Ohio study's results are compelling, the researchers themselves offer some important context. It was a smaller study, and they recommend larger trials to confirm the findings. It is also not a cure for asthma. Patients should continue working with their doctors and taking prescribed medications. However, the evidence adds to a growing consensus that indoor air quality, heavily influenced by our cooking appliances, plays a significant role in respiratory health. For families, especially those with members who have asthma or other respiratory conditions, being aware of this connection is a crucial first step. Improving kitchen ventilation by using an exhaust fan or opening a window can help reduce pollutant levels, but this study shows that removing the source of the pollution has the most significant impact.
