A New Chapter for Indian Railways
For decades, train journeys were simply about getting from one point to another. Today, Indian Railways is scripting a new story where the journey itself is a destination. This shift is driven by a two-pronged approach: enhancing speed and connectivity
with modern trains, and curating unique travel experiences that dive deep into India's heritage. Initiatives like 'Dekho Apna Desh' and 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' are the philosophical backbone of this change, encouraging Indians to discover their own country. The result is a growing network of trains designed not just for transport, but for tourism, making it easier than ever to access pilgrimage sites, historical monuments, and natural wonders.
Bharat Gaurav: Trains with a Theme
At the forefront of this transformation is the Bharat Gaurav scheme, launched in 2021 to promote theme-based tourist circuit trains. Operated by both IRCTC and private players, these trains offer all-inclusive tour packages covering travel, accommodation, meals, and guided sightseeing. Popular circuits like the Shri Ramayan Yatra, which covers prominent sites associated with the life of Lord Ram, and the Guru Kripa Yatra for Sikh pilgrims, have seen immense success. These curated itineraries remove the logistical hurdles of planning complex multi-city tours, allowing travellers to immerse themselves fully in spiritual and cultural journeys across the country, from the 7 Jyotirlingas to tours covering South India's temple towns.
Vande Bharat: High-Speed Heritage Corridors
The expansion of the Vande Bharat Express network is a game-changer for weekend getaways and short trips. With over 82 routes operational as of August 2026, these high-speed trains are drastically cutting travel times to key cultural hubs. Destinations like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Tirupati, and Khajuraho are now more accessible, making spiritual and heritage travel quicker and more comfortable. A traveller can now journey from Delhi to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, in under two hours. The Vande Bharat network is effectively creating high-speed heritage corridors, linking major cities directly to sites of immense cultural importance.
Vistadome Coaches: A Window to India's Beauty
Complementing speed is the focus on scenic beauty with the introduction of Vistadome coaches on select routes. These specially designed coaches feature large glass windows and transparent roofs, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Initially introduced in 2017, they have become a major tourist attraction on routes like the Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site itself, and the picturesque journeys through the Western Ghats from Mumbai to Goa or Bengaluru to Mangaluru. Passing through lush valleys, dense forests, and past cascading waterfalls, these coaches transform the travel experience, particularly in the monsoon, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
Connecting the Dots for Deeper Exploration
This railway renaissance is part of a larger infrastructure push aimed at creating integrated tourism circuits. It’s not just about single destinations anymore. Improved rail links, combined with new expressways, are encouraging travellers to explore clusters of sites. For instance, state governments are actively developing lesser-known sites and linking them to established tourist trails, aiming to distribute tourism's economic benefits and offer richer itineraries. By connecting major hubs to remote heritage locations, and by making the travel experience itself more comfortable and engaging, railways are unlocking a new, more accessible era for cultural exploration across the subcontinent.
