The Next Big Thing: A Vande Bharat Sleeper
The most significant travel update for the Delhi-Varanasi corridor is the planned introduction of a second, dedicated Vande Bharat Sleeper service. While the existing chair-car train (22435/22436) continues its popular daytime runs, Indian Railways is preparing
to launch an overnight service on this same high-demand route. This move aims to offer a faster, more comfortable alternative to the popular overnight trains that are often heavily booked, allowing passengers to travel between the two cities without losing a workday. The Delhi-Varanasi corridor is already the busiest Vande Bharat route, having served over 7.3 million passengers, making it a logical choice for this major service expansion.
Proposed Timings and Route
According to proposed schedules reported by railway officials, the new sleeper service is designed for convenience. The train is expected to depart from Varanasi Cantt at approximately 9:20 PM, arriving in New Delhi around 5:00 AM the next morning. The return journey would see a departure from New Delhi at a similar time, reaching Varanasi early the following day. The entire journey is expected to take just under eight hours. The train will make crucial stops at Prayagraj and Kanpur, enhancing connectivity for passengers from these major Uttar Pradesh cities as well. However, it's important to note that these timings are still proposals and the final schedule will be confirmed by the Railway Board.
What to Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just about speed; it's a significant upgrade in passenger experience. The proposed 16-coach train is designed to carry around 823 passengers. The configuration is expected to include one First AC coach, four AC 2-tier coaches, and eleven AC 3-tier coaches, catering to different budget levels. These modern rakes feature enhanced safety systems, automatic doors, improved hygiene in washrooms, and better overall passenger comfort, representing a new era for long-distance train travel in India.
When Will It Launch?
While there has been speculation about launch dates in October, including mentions of October 12th and 25th, the latest reports from railway officials suggest a launch closer to November 2026, potentially to coincide with the Diwali festive season rush. The official date, fare structure, and the opening of ticket bookings have not yet been announced by Indian Railways. Passengers are advised to wait for the official notification before making travel plans. The existing daytime Vande Bharat Express (22436/22435) continues to operate as scheduled, running six days a week and departing from New Delhi at 6:00 AM and from Varanasi at 3:00 PM.
