1. The Quick-Twist Bun
This is the simplest and fastest pencil updo, perfect for getting your hair out of your face in a hurry. It’s the ideal casual look for a day at the office, in class, or running errands. Start by gathering your hair into a low ponytail, but don’t secure
it. Begin twisting the entire length of the ponytail tightly from the base to the ends. Once the hair starts coiling on itself, wrap it into a flat, circular bun against the back of your head. Hold the bun in place with one hand. With the other, take your pencil and push it down through the top edge of the bun, catch some of the hair against your scalp underneath, and then push it back up through the opposite side of the bun. The key is to weave the pencil through the bun and the base hair to lock it in place.
2. The Fold-Through Knot
A slight variation on the classic bun, this method creates a knotted look that feels a little more intentional and secure. Gather your hair as if for a low ponytail. Place the pencil horizontally behind the base of this ponytail. Now, loop your hair up and over the pencil, then tuck the ends of your hair down through the loop you've just created, between the pencil and your head. Pull the ends to tighten the knot around the pencil. Finally, rotate the pencil 180 degrees, flipping it upwards against your head, and push it through to secure the style. This technique creates a very stable updo that works well for medium to long hair and adds a touch of everyday elegance.
3. The Elegant French Twist
For a neater, more formal look, the French twist is a timeless classic that can absolutely be achieved with a pencil. Gather your hair at the nape of your neck. Start twisting your hair upwards, tightly against your head, tucking the ends in as you go up. This creates a vertical roll. Hold the twist firmly in place with one hand. Take the pencil and insert it from the top right side of the twist, angling it downwards and to the left. Push the pencil down along your scalp, catching the hair from the twist as you go. The pencil should run parallel to your head, hidden inside the roll of hair, securing it tightly. This sophisticated style is perfect for a work meeting or an evening out.
4. The Half-Up Pencil Lock
This style is perfect for when you want your hair away from your face but still want to show off its length. It’s a softer, more romantic look. Section off the top half of your hair, from your temples to the crown of your head. Gather this section and give it a small twist, just two or three turns. Hold the twist and insert the pencil from one side, going underneath the twisted section. Push the pencil through to the other side. For extra hold, you can twist the hair around the pencil once before pushing it through. This creates a simple but pretty half-updo that is both functional and fashionable, ideal for a coffee date or a relaxed weekend.
5. The Braided Pencil Bun
If you want to add some texture and a bohemian flair to your updo, incorporating a braid is a fantastic option. Start by gathering your hair into a ponytail and braiding it all the way down, securing the end with a small elastic if you have one (if not, just hold it). Now, take the braid and coil it into a bun against your head, just as you would with unbraided hair. The braid will give the bun more volume and a beautiful, intricate pattern. Secure it using the same weaving technique as the quick-twist bun: push the pencil down through the top of the braided bun, anchor it in the hair at the base, and drive it up through the bottom of the bun on the other side. This style holds exceptionally well, thanks to the structure of the braid.
