A Connection Decades in the Making
The dream of connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India via an all-weather rail line has been a national ambition for decades. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a monumental undertaking, was conceived to overcome the formidable
Himalayan terrain that often leaves the valley isolated, especially during harsh winters. After years of relentless construction through some of the world's most challenging geology, the final link in this 272-kilometre chain is now complete. The project, which saw completion in multiple phases over nearly three decades, stands as a testament to modern Indian engineering and perseverance. Its full operation marks a historic moment, promising to transform travel, trade, and tourism in the region by providing a reliable, safe, and fast mode of transport.
The Crown Jewel: Riding the Chenab Bridge
The undisputed highlight of this journey is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge. Soaring 359 metres above the riverbed, it holds the title of the world's highest railway arch bridge—a distinction that makes it taller than the Eiffel Tower. As the train ventures onto this 1.3-kilometre-long steel marvel, passengers are treated to a perspective that was previously unimaginable. The sensation is one of floating above the gorge, with the silver ribbon of the Chenab River far below and the vast, rugged mountains of the Reasi district stretching in every direction. Through a Glass-Topped Coach
To fully immerse travellers in the stunning surroundings, Indian Railways has deployed Vistadome coaches on this route. These special carriages are designed for sightseeing, featuring large panoramic windows, rotating seats, and a glass roof. From the comfort of your seat, you can gaze up at the sky and the towering peaks above, or watch the lush valleys and charming villages roll by. The Vistadome experience transforms the journey from a simple commute into a 360-degree cinematic event.
