So, what makes EOS-05 different? The key is its orbit. Most Earth observation satellites circle the planet in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), passing over a specific location only at set intervals. EOS-05, however, is India’s first dedicated imaging satellite to
be placed in a Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO), approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. At this altitude, the satellite’s orbital period matches the Earth's rotation, allowing it to remain stationary over the Indian subcontinent. This transforms it from a satellite that takes periodic snapshots into a persistent, unblinking eye, capable of providing near real-time imagery of large areas at frequent intervals. This constant watch is a fundamental shift in India's observation capacity.
A Story of Resilience and Redemption
The success of the EOS-05 mission, launched aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket, carries deep significance for ISRO.
