A Strategic Partnership Takes Flight
Air India and India's Ministry of Tourism have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly promote the country as a premier global travel destination. Announced on July 27, 2026, this agreement makes Air India the first global airline to formally
partner with the ministry in this capacity. The collaboration frames a coordinated strategy across tourism marketing, destination storytelling, and enhancing the visitor experience. By combining the government's 'Incredible India' campaign with the airline's expanding international network, the goal is to boost inbound tourism and solidify India's position as a key aviation hub. Nipun Aggarwal, Air India's Chief Commercial Officer, noted that the airline has a unique responsibility to showcase a "new India that is confident, vibrant, warm, and welcoming."
From Transit Hub to Tourist Hotspot
The most compelling part of the MoU is its focus on transit tourism, an area where India has historically lost out to hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Singapore. The plan is to develop dedicated stopover programmes that encourage passengers connecting through Air India's hubs in Delhi and Mumbai to extend their layovers and explore the country. This strategy aims to turn a transit inconvenience into a tourism opportunity. To make this appealing, the partners will explore a co-branded "Visit India Pass" for international travellers and link incentives to Air India's 'Maharaja Club' loyalty programme, potentially offering special access to cultural attractions and heritage sites. The idea is to make an Indian stopover an attractive part of the journey, not just a necessary pause.
The Mechanics of a Global Campaign
Under the agreement, both organisations will launch co-branded global marketing campaigns across a wide range of platforms, including digital and social media, as well as Air India's inflight branding. The partnership also involves jointly engaging with tour operators and travel trade partners in key international markets through roadshows, tourism exhibitions, and familiarisation trips designed to boost interest in India. This collaboration will extend to State Tourism Boards to ensure that destinations across the entire country are highlighted. By leveraging Air India's presence on five continents and its connections to over 1,000 destinations through codeshare and interline partnerships, the 'Incredible India' story will be taken directly to a massive global audience.
Why This is a Game-Changer
This initiative aligns perfectly with Air India's broader strategy to build a robust hub-and-spoke network. The airline recently launched 'Easy Connect' flights from smaller Indian cities like Varanasi, allowing passengers to clear immigration at their origin and seamlessly connect to international flights from hubs like Delhi. This simplifies travel for Indians and also lays the groundwork for making Indian hubs more efficient for international transit. Currently, an estimated 85% of the 20 million long-haul connecting passengers to and from India transit through overseas airports. By creating attractive stopover options, Air India can capture a significant portion of this market, boosting its own revenue while simultaneously funnelling tourist dollars into the Indian economy.
Navigating the Path Ahead
While the ambition is clear, success will depend on execution. Creating a seamless stopover experience requires more than just marketing; it depends on efficient visa processes, smooth airport transfers, and high-quality, accessible tourism products for short-stay visitors. Competing with established stopover destinations that have perfected this model for years will be a significant challenge. The agreement is described as non-commercial and non-binding, meaning its power lies in the commitment of both parties to collaborate effectively. The framework is in place, but turning the vision of India as a premier transit and tourism hub into a reality will require sustained effort from the airline, the government, and the wider tourism industry.
