The End of the Security Scramble
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in the process of rolling out new-generation security scanners across its terminals. This upgrade is designed to eliminate one of the most common hassles for passengers: having to remove electronic devices and liquids
from their hand luggage for screening. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths confirmed that the airport is actively investing in the new technology to make the entire security check quicker and more convenient for the millions who travel through the hub. The goal is to gradually replace all older screening systems, ensuring a consistent and improved experience for every passenger.
How the New 3D Technology Works
The technology at the heart of this upgrade is Computed Tomography (CT) scanning. Similar to the CT scanners used in hospitals, these machines provide a high-resolution, 3D image of the contents of a passenger's bag. This advanced imaging, often powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), allows security staff to inspect luggage in far greater detail without it being unpacked. The system can automatically recognise objects and analyse materials at a molecular level, giving security personnel a clear view of everything inside. This enhanced capability means threats can be identified more effectively while approved items like laptops and liquids can remain safely stowed in your carry-on.
What This Means for Your Carry-On Bag
For travellers, the primary benefit is a significant reduction in stress and time spent at security checkpoints. The frantic search for your laptop, tablet, and toiletries will no longer be necessary once the new scanners are fully operational. According to airport officials, passengers will be able to leave their large electronics and liquids inside their bags during screening. However, it is important to note that this does not mean the rules on liquid quantities are being abolished. The restriction on liquid containers, generally no more than 100ml each, is expected to remain in place for now. The change is about the screening process, not the items you are permitted to carry.
A Gradual Rollout Across Terminals
This upgrade is not happening overnight. The new scanners are being installed in a phased approach across all three of DXB's terminals as part of a continuous programme of improvements. The rollout is part of a major contract with security technology firm Smiths Detection, announced in 2025, to bring their advanced CT scanners to Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Some machines are already operational, and passengers may start to notice the changes during their travels. While some reports have suggested a completion date around May or by the end of 2026, the official word is that it is an ongoing replacement of older equipment, with work taking place alongside other refurbishments in areas like Terminal 1.

This security enhancement is a key component of Dubai's wider strategy to create a seamless and intelligent airport experience. Officials have spoken about a future of 'barrier-free travel', where technology streamlines every step of the journey. This vision includes innovations like passport-less immigration using biometric face recognition, automated tray return systems, and smart lane management at security checkpoints. By investing heavily in cutting-edge tech, Dubai Airports aims to not only bolster security but also solidify its reputation as a leading global aviation hub that prioritises passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
