temperatures typically peak in March, not late August. This unseasonal and record-breaking heat is a clear indicator of a long-term warming trend supercharged by a developing El Niño event. Scientists note that over 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions is absorbed by the oceans, making sea surface temperature a critical vital sign for the planet's health. This sustained warming has led to a dramatic increase in marine heatwaves, which have more than doubled in frequency since the 1980s.
Life Beneath the Waves Under Siege
This unrelenting heat places immense pressure on marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, often called the rainforests of the sea, are among the most immediate victims. Prolonged periods of elevated temperatures cause coral bleaching, where corals expel the vital algae living in their tissues, turning them bone-white. While reefs can sometimes recover if temperatures cool, the increasing frequency of these events is shrinking the recovery window. A recent global report highlighted that an estimated 9.5% of the world's hard coral cover has already been lost. Beyond corals, marine heatwaves disrupt entire food chains. Fish populations are forced to migrate towards cooler waters, impacting species that depend on them and the fisheries that support billions of people. These events can also trigger mass die-offs and harmful algal blooms, further destabilising fragile marine environments.
The View from India's Coastline
The impact of this global trend is particularly acute for India. The Indian Ocean is warming at one of the fastest rates in the world. This has profound implications for the Indian summer monsoon, which is crucial for the nation's agriculture and water security. Marine heatwaves in the Indian Ocean can alter rainfall patterns, leading to short bursts of extreme rain amid longer dry spells. Furthermore, warmer sea surface temperatures, especially those above 28°C, provide fuel for tropical cyclones, increasing their frequency and intensity in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Projections show that the number of marine heatwave days in the Indian Ocean could skyrocket from about 20 per year to over 220, essentially creating a near-permanent state of heat stress. This threatens India’s extensive coastline, the fishing industry that millions rely on, and the delicate marine ecosystems like the Lakshadweep corals.
An Uncertain Future
The combination of long-term, human-driven climate change and natural climate variations like El Niño is pushing our oceans into uncharted territory. The current El Niño is forecast to strengthen, potentially becoming one of the most intense in decades, which will likely push global temperatures even higher in the coming months. Scientists warn that the consequences are not just ecological but societal. Extreme ocean heat can fuel more intense storms and hurricanes, contribute to sea-level rise through thermal expansion, and jeopardise food security for coastal communities worldwide. The record temperatures seen in 2026 are not an anomaly but part of a clear and accelerating trend. Addressing this requires a dual approach: global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local measures to build resilience and protect vulnerable marine habitats.
