Train journeys in South India are getting a scenic upgrade. Southern Railway recently introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, transforming the travel experience with panoramic windows and a glass roof.
A New Window to the Western Ghats
Southern Railway has attached
a state-of-the-art Vistadome coach to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train Nos. 16327/16328), marking a significant step forward for rail tourism in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Launched as a temporary trial service starting October 22, 2026, and scheduled to run until mid-January 2027, this initiative offers passengers an immersive way to experience one of the region's most picturesque routes. The service connects two major pilgrimage centres, the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur, making the journey as divine as the destinations. The addition of this coach is aimed squarely at travellers who wish to soak in the natural beauty of the Western Ghats, turning a simple train ride into a memorable sightseeing adventure.
What Makes a Vistadome Coach Special?
Inspired by similar tourist trains in Europe, a Vistadome coach is designed for one primary purpose: sightseeing. Its most prominent features are the expansive, extra-large glass windows and a transparent glass roof, which together provide an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the landscape. Unlike conventional coaches, the seats in a Vistadome are a key part of the experience. The plush, reclining chairs can rotate, sometimes up to 180 or 360 degrees, allowing passengers to always face the best view or converse with fellow travellers. The coach is fully air-conditioned and often includes modern amenities like an infotainment system, Wi-Fi, charging sockets for every passenger, and a dedicated observation lounge at the rear for a unique perspective of the tracks left behind. The electrically controlled glass roof can even be switched between transparent and translucent modes for passenger comfort.
The Scenic Sengottai-Punalur Route
The true highlight of this journey is the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a stretch renowned for its stunning natural beauty. As the train navigates this part of the Western Ghats, passengers are treated to views of misty mountains, lush green valleys, dense forests, and numerous tunnels. Key attractions along this corridor include the historic 13-arch bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge) near Aryankavu, an engineering marvel that offers a spectacular photo opportunity from the Vistadome coach. The region is also home to several waterfalls, such as the Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty falls, which are especially vibrant during and after the monsoon season. The introduction of the Vistadome coach allows travellers to appreciate these sights without obstruction, making the journey through the Aryankavu pass a core part of the travel experience.
A Growing Trend in Indian Tourism
The Madurai–Guruvayur Vistadome service is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to promote tourism across the country. The first Vistadome coach was introduced back in 2017 on the breathtaking Visakhapatnam–Araku Valley route. Since then, these popular coaches have been added to dozens of scenic routes, including the Kalka–Shimla heritage line, the journey through the Western Ghats from Mumbai to Goa, and services in the northeastern states. This strategy aims to enhance the travel experience on routes known for their natural beauty, encouraging travellers to see the journey itself as a destination. The immediate popularity of the Madurai–Guruvayur service, with tickets reportedly selling out quickly for its initial runs, underscores the strong public demand for such premium, experience–focused travel options.
How to Plan Your Vistadome Journey
For those looking to experience this scenic ride, the Vistadome coach is available on a specific schedule. The service from Madurai (Train No. 16327) runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The return journey from Guruvayur (Train No. 16328) operates on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This trial run is currently scheduled until January 15–16, 2027. Tickets can be booked through official Indian Railways channels, where the coach is listed under the 'Executive AC Chair Car' or 'EV' class. Fares vary by distance, with the full journey from Madurai to Guruvayur reported to be around Rs 1,875. Given the high demand, it's advisable to book well in advance to secure a seat for this unique travel experience.
