Two pairs of spectacles, seemingly from a fantasy, captured the worlds imagination. Known as the 'Astaneh-Ye Ferdaws' (Gate of Paradise) and 'Halqeh-Ye Nur' (Halo of Light), these 17th-century Mughal artifacts featured lenses sliced from a single massive
emerald and a colossal diamond, respectively. The emerald lenses, a pair of tear-drop shapes weighing a combined 27 carats, are believed to have been carved from a single rough stone that weighed over 300 carats. Similarly, the diamond lenses were fashioned from a diamond estimated to be over 200 carats. For centuries, they were objects of immense artistic and historical value, believed to offer spiritual enlightenment to the wearer. Green was associated with paradise in Islamic tradition, suggesting these were more than just aids for vision; they were portals to a divine experience.
