A Milestone of Three Million
Mahindra's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune, recently celebrated the production of its three-millionth vehicle. The landmark vehicle was not a traditional SUV, but the BE 6, one of the company's new 'Born Electric' models.
This choice was symbolic, underscoring the company’s strategic pivot towards an electric future. The achievement highlights a dramatic acceleration in production speed; while the first million vehicles took 107 months to produce, the most recent million rolled off the line in just 27 months. This rapid scale-up points to surging demand and, more importantly, the immense efficiency of its modernised plant.
The Rise of the Robots
The Chakan plant is a showcase of Industry 4.0 in action, leveraging artificial intelligence, 5G connectivity, and the Internet of Things (IoT). At the heart of this technological leap are approximately 1,500 robots that have transformed the factory floor. The body shop boasts an automation level of over 98%, where robots perform tasks with relentless precision. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) handle the movement of materials, ensuring a seamless and safe workflow. This high degree of automation is not about replacing human workers but about enhancing quality, efficiency, and safety. AI-powered systems even monitor the shop floor to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Powered by a Green Vision
Beyond the futuristic automation, Mahindra has embedded sustainability deep into its operations. The entire manufacturing process for its electric vehicles at Chakan is powered by 100% renewable energy. Overall, more than half of the entire facility's energy needs are met through green sources. The commitment doesn't stop there. The plant is certified as 'Zero Waste to Landfill' and is 'water positive', meaning it replenishes 131% of the water it consumes through extensive rainwater harvesting and recharge initiatives. This proves that high-volume, advanced manufacturing can coexist with environmental stewardship.
The Electric Future is Here
The selection of the BE 6 electric SUV as the three-millionth vehicle is a clear statement of intent. The Chakan facility has a dedicated EV manufacturing and battery assembly unit, representing a significant portion of the company's investment in electric mobility. Spread across 88,000 square metres, this specialised zone is designed to produce Mahindra's INGLO platform-based 'Born Electric' vehicles. With a fully automated battery assembly line and rigorous testing protocols, Mahindra is building the capacity to become a dominant player in India's growing EV market. The plant’s flexibility is a key asset, with seven multi-model assembly lines capable of producing 19 different models and over 450 variants, seamlessly integrating EV and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle production.
