In a report titled "Gen-AI in India: Jobs Crosswinds, Productivity Tailwinds," Goldman Sachs lays out a scenario where artificial intelligence becomes a major economic driver. Their baseline estimate suggests an annual productivity growth boost of about
0.4 percentage points over a 10-year period. The report even offers a range, with potential gains from 0.1 to 0.8 percentage points, depending on how advanced AI becomes at handling complex tasks. This isn't just a number; it represents a fundamental shift in how work is done, promising to enhance efficiency across the board by automating routine tasks and freeing up human workers to focus on higher-value activities like analysis and strategy.
Augmentation Over Automation
A key takeaway from the forecast is its focus on augmentation rather than outright job replacement. The report argues that Gen-AI is more likely to complement Indian workers than make them redundant. It estimates that while 8-12% of non-agricultural employment faces a risk of being substituted, a much larger share—between 42% and 48%—is likely to be complemented by AI. This means for nearly half the workforce, AI will act as a powerful tool, helping them perform their jobs better and faster. The technology is expected to automate between 9% and 17% of current work tasks, particularly those that are repetitive, allowing employees to pivot to more creative, supervisory, or client-facing roles that require human judgment.
Which Sectors Stand to Gain Most?
The impact of generative AI will not be uniform across the economy. Goldman Sachs identifies knowledge-intensive service sectors as being best positioned to benefit. Industries like healthcare, education, media, and financial services are expected to see significant productivity gains as AI assists with diagnostics, personalized learning, content creation, and data analysis. India's massive IT and business process services (BPS) sector also stands at a crucial juncture. While there are concerns about automation, the prevailing view is that AI will enhance service delivery and create new opportunities, a sentiment echoed by NASSCOM reports showing the Indian IT industry is already generating billions in AI-related revenue.
The Hurdles on the Horizon
This optimistic future is not guaranteed. Realizing these productivity gains depends on overcoming significant challenges. The Goldman Sachs report highlights infrastructure as a critical bottleneck. India currently accounts for only about 1% of global data-center capacity, and scaling AI adoption will require massive investment in computing power, data centers, and reliable energy. Beyond hardware, there is a pressing need for a skilled workforce. As tasks are automated, reskilling and upskilling programs will be essential to help workers transition into new, AI-augmented roles. Other reports also point to challenges like the high cost of implementation for smaller businesses, data privacy concerns, and the need for clear governance frameworks to manage the technology responsibly.
