What Is 'Play Mode'?
Reddit has begun a limited test of a new feature called 'Play Mode', which transforms traditional text-based posts and their comment threads into short-form videos. Instead of reading, users can opt to watch a video where AI-generated voices narrate the original
post and a selection of its most popular comments. During playback, the text is highlighted on screen karaoke-style as it's being read. Each video created this way is labeled with the disclaimer "Real conversation voiced by AI" to ensure transparency. This feature doesn't replace the original format; users can toggle between the classic 'Read' view and the new 'Play' mode, and the original text post and all its comments remain fully accessible.
The TikTok-ification of Reddit
This move is a direct response to a massively popular trend on other social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube. For years, creators on these platforms have repurposed interesting, dramatic, or funny Reddit threads into simple videos, often using a robotic text-to-speech voice to read the stories over unrelated footage, such as video game clips. This format has proven to be incredibly engaging, racking up millions of views. Reddit's leadership has taken notice. During a recent earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this trend, noting that a "listened-to or spoken Reddit can be really engaging." By building this functionality directly into its own platform, Reddit is aiming to reclaim the engagement and revenue that was previously being generated by its content on competitor sites.
A Broader Push into Video
Play Mode isn't an isolated experiment. It's the latest step in Reddit's broader strategy to integrate more video and rich media into its platform, which has historically been dominated by text. In June 2026, the company rolled out the ability for users to reply to posts with videos in the comments section, a feature intended to make conversations more immersive and expressive. According to Reddit, video comments already account for over 10% of all video content posted on the platform, suggesting users are adapting to these new formats. This push is crucial for Reddit, which recently became a publicly traded company and is under pressure to increase user engagement metrics like daily active users to appeal to investors.
How Reddit Hopes You'll Use It
Reddit has framed the 'Play Mode' experiment around accessibility and convenience. The company suggests that users might want to listen to Reddit threads while doing other activities where reading isn't practical, such as exercising, walking, or running errands. The audio-video format allows for passive consumption, turning Reddit threads into mini-podcasts. The goal is to make it easier for people to experience the unique conversations on the platform in whichever format works best for them at any given moment. In one example shared by the company, an eight-year-old thread from the r/boardgames subreddit about road trip games was converted into a three-minute narrated video.
When Can You Try It?
For now, 'Play Mode' is a very limited test. It began rolling out on August 17, 2026, starting with the web version and followed by the iOS and Android apps. The feature is currently available only for a small selection of English-language posts in specific, manually chosen subreddits. Most users will not see the feature yet. A Reddit spokesperson emphasized that this is an early experiment designed to gauge user interest and determine how to implement such features in a way that feels "authentic to Reddit." The company has not announced a timeline for a wider rollout, as its future depends on the results of this initial test.
