What is the New Token System?
For anyone who has spent hours waiting in line for the Tatkal window to open, the new process marks a significant change. Instead of queuing continuously, passengers now visit the reservation counter during a specific morning window to collect a numbered
token. This token assigns you a place in the booking sequence. You are then free to leave and return when the actual booking begins, where passengers are called according to their token number. The goal is to reduce overcrowding, prevent altercations, and curb the menace of touts who often occupy spots in the line. This new system only applies to tickets booked in person at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters; online bookings through the IRCTC website and app remain unchanged.
Your Step-by-Step Booking Guide
To navigate the new system successfully, timing is everything. The process is now split into two distinct phases: token collection and ticket booking. First, you must arrive at the counter during the designated token distribution window. For AC class tickets, tokens are issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For Non-AC classes like Sleeper, the window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The actual booking times remain the same: 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for Non-AC. After collecting your token, you can return closer to the booking time and wait for your number to be called to finalise the purchase.
The Photo ID Rule Explained
This is where passengers need to pay close attention, as the rules around photo identification are now more complex. The token you receive is strictly non-transferable. The ticket will only be issued to the person whose name and ID are associated with that token. Furthermore, the system introduces two priority categories. Category A is for passengers booking for themselves or immediate family members, and they get first priority. To get a Category A token, the person at the counter must present their own valid photo ID, plus a valid ID for the family member that helps prove the relationship. Category B is for all other bookings and these passengers are served after Category A is finished. A valid government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, or Passport is mandatory to get any token.
Managing Expectations and Other Details
It is important to know that there is a limit to the number of tokens issued. Initially, each counter is expected to give out around 10 tokens for AC class and 15 for Non-AC class, though this number may be adjusted based on demand at specific stations. If any Tatkal seats are still available after all token holders have been served, the counter will open up for walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis. The success of getting a ticket still depends on being early enough to secure one of the limited tokens. This system simply makes the waiting process more orderly rather than guaranteeing a ticket.
Tips for a Smooth Booking Experience
To make the most of the new system and avoid disappointment, preparation is key. First, ensure you arrive at the station well within the correct token distribution window for your travel class. Second, always carry your original, valid government-issued photo ID. If booking for family, bring their ID proof as well. Third, have your reservation requisition slip completely filled out with all passenger names and details before you approach the counter. This will speed up the process for everyone when your token number is called. Finally, remember these rules are for counter bookings only, so if you prefer the online route, your process has not changed.
