What Exactly is EOS-05?
EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation satellite launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on September 4, 2026. It was carried into space by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F17). Weighing approximately 2,367
kilograms, its primary mission is to provide near real-time, high-resolution imagery of the Indian subcontinent. The launch is particularly significant as it marks a successful return to form for ISRO after a few setbacks, reinforcing the reliability of its GSLV rocket. After being placed in an initial transfer orbit, the satellite used its own propulsion system to perform a series of manoeuvres, settling into its final geosynchronous orbit days later.
Why is a Geosynchronous Orbit a Big Deal?
Most Earth-imaging satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), just a few hundred kilometres up. This proximity allows for very detailed images, but they are constantly moving at high speed, meaning they can only see a particular spot on Earth for a few minutes before they pass over. A geosynchronous orbit, in contrast, is much higher—about 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. At this specific altitude, a satellite's orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. This means the satellite stays over the same general region of the planet at all times. If the orbit is perfectly circular and directly over the equator, it's called 'geostationary,' appearing fixed in the sky. For EOS-05, this high perch allows it to maintain a constant watch over the Indian subcontinent, a capability that LEO satellites simply cannot provide.
The Power of a 'Dedicated Imaging' Satellite
While India has previously operated satellites from geostationary orbit, they have primarily been for weather monitoring, like the INSAT series. EOS-05 is different because it is the country's first dedicated imaging satellite in this orbit. Its main job isn't just to see clouds, but to capture detailed images of the land and sea below.
