A Palace on Wheels
Boarding El Transcantábrico is like stepping back into the golden age of rail travel. The train is composed of original Pullman lounge cars from the 1920s, meticulously restored to evoke Belle Époque glamour while providing modern comforts. With just
14 suites, the experience is intimate, catering to a maximum of 28 passengers. Each spacious suite is a private sanctuary featuring a living area, a bedroom with a double or twin beds, and a full private bathroom, some with hydromassage showers. Common areas include panoramic viewing cars, a library, and even a pub car that features live entertainment in the evenings.
The Journey Through 'Green Spain'
The classic eight-day, seven-night journey connects two of Spain's most iconic northern cities: San Sebastián in the Basque Country and Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The route winds through the regions colloquially known as 'Green Spain', showcasing a landscape of rolling hills, rugged coastline, and charming fishing villages that contrasts sharply with the Mediterranean south. The train travels at a leisurely pace during the day and stops overnight at stations, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep and allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the experience without the constant motion.
A Daily Dose of Culture
This is far more than just a train ride. The journey is an all-inclusive, curated tour. A luxury coach accompanies the train, whisking guests away on daily guided excursions. Highlights often include a visit to the iconic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, exploring the medieval streets of Santillana del Mar, and marvelling at the prehistoric art in the Altamira Cave replica. The itinerary also delves into nature with trips to the stunning Picos de Europa National Park and the dramatic rock formations of As Catedrais beach. The journey culminates in Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the final destination for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
A Gastronomic Voyage
Northern Spain is a global culinary hotspot, and the Transcantábrico journey is a celebration of its food. The experience is as much a gastronomic tour as it is a scenic one. While elaborate buffet and à la carte breakfasts are served on board, lunches and dinners are a mix of onboard fine dining and meals at specially selected first-class restaurants in the towns visited. This allows passengers to sample the very best of regional specialities, from Basque pintxos and fresh Cantabrian seafood to Asturian fabada stew and Galician delicacies, all paired with excellent local wines. The focus is on fresh, local ingredients prepared by renowned chefs, providing a true taste of the region's celebrated cuisine.
