A Birthday Gift to the Founder
The Huayra 70 Derecho is not just another limited-run hypercar; it is a deeply personal project. It serves as the second of three special “Huayra 70” models created to celebrate the 70th birthday of the company’s founder, Horacio Pagani. Developed by
Pagani’s “Grandi Complicazioni” division—the in-house department for bespoke and few-off projects—the Derecho is a testament to the brand's commitment to artisanal craftsmanship. The name itself is evocative. “Derecho” is Spanish, but it also refers to a rare and powerful, straight-line windstorm, a fitting metaphor for a car defined by its ferocious, linear power. This one-off creation made its world premiere at the iconic British motorsport festival, sharing the stage with other Pagani legends like the Zonda F Roadster and Utopia Roadster.
The Analogue Heart: A V12 and a Manual Gearbox
At the core of the Derecho's purist philosophy is its powertrain. While competitors increasingly turn to hybrid systems and dual-clutch automatics, Pagani has equipped the 70 Derecho with a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12. This powerhouse generates an astounding 864 horsepower and 1,100 Nm of torque. More significantly, all that power is channelled to the rear wheels through a seven-speed gated manual transmission developed with Xtrac. This choice is a deliberate nod to driving purists. While the Huayra was not originally offered with a manual (save for a late one-off model called the Epitome), the demand was so high that Pagani ensured its successor, the Utopia, offered one, with a staggering 75% of customers choosing to shift for themselves. The Derecho continues this trend, offering a direct, mechanical connection between driver and machine that is nearly extinct in the hypercar world.
Artistry in Every Detail
A Pagani is as much a work of art as it is a performance machine, and the Derecho is no exception. Its exterior is finished in a unique Pearl Orange and Inky Blue livery, with the paint so transparent it reveals the intricate fish-bone weave of the carbon fibre bodywork beneath. Milled aluminum components are given a Glossy Titanium anodized finish, matching the unique 20- and 21-inch forged titanium wheels. Inside, the analogue theme continues. The cabin is a masterpiece of Ceramic White and Tricolore Blue leather, with bespoke stitching and orange accents on the steering wheel and the exposed metal shifter. Instead of vast touchscreens, the driver is greeted by purely analogue dials, each one a jewel-like mechanism that celebrates the art of engineering. This philosophy, which Horacio Pagani credits to Leonardo da Vinci's principles of blending art and science, is central to the brand's identity.
A Statement on the Future
While the automotive industry rushes toward an electric future, Pagani has found its niche by defiantly celebrating the internal combustion engine. Horacio Pagani has noted that the brand's clients simply weren't interested in an electric Pagani, preferring the emotional engagement of a V12. The Huayra 70 Derecho is the ultimate expression of this philosophy. It's not about chasing the absolute fastest lap times, but about delivering an unparalleled sensory experience: the sound of the engine, the tactile feel of the gearshift, and the unfiltered feedback through the chassis. It proves that even as the Huayra model line officially makes way for the Utopia, its spirit lives on through these special projects. It's a reminder that for a select group of collectors, the value lies not just in speed, but in soul.
