The heart of the new Range Rover Sport Electric is a formidable dual-motor powertrain, which it shares with the larger flagship Range Rover Electric. This setup delivers a potent 542 horsepower and a massive 850 Nm of torque to all four wheels, promising
performance that is more dynamic and faster than any previous Sport model. The instant torque delivery, characteristic of electric vehicles, is a significant advantage. It not only provides thrilling acceleration on pavement but also offers exceptionally precise control for low-speed off-road manoeuvres on challenging terrain. The vehicle is built on an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, a feature shared with high-performance EVs. This allows for significantly faster DC charging, minimising downtime on long journeys. The system's efficiency also helps preserve range, especially in cold weather.
Mastering On-Road Manners
While its off-road pedigree is legendary, the Sport has always been a supremely comfortable and capable road car. The electric version aims to elevate this experience. Engineers have focused on creating a serene cabin, with prototypes demonstrating impeccable insulation from wind and road noise. The heavy battery pack is mounted low in the floor, lowering the vehicle's centre of gravity and contributing to a more planted feel in corners with minimal body roll. The chassis features advanced technologies like Dynamic Air Suspension and All-Wheel Steering. The suspension system uses navigation data to proactively prepare for upcoming curves, ensuring a smooth and composed ride. Meanwhile, the rear-wheel steering enhances high-speed stability and gives the large SUV the turning circle of a much smaller car, making it surprisingly agile in tight city streets.
Uncompromised Off-Road DNA
Land Rover is adamant that electrification will not dilute the brand's core identity. The electric Sport is engineered to be just as formidable off-road as its predecessors. A key benefit of the electric powertrain is the ability to manage power with incredible precision, eliminating the need for traditional low-range gearboxes or locking differentials. The vehicle's intelligent software can distribute torque to each wheel in milliseconds, ensuring traction in the most slippery conditions. The vehicle retains its impressive approach and departure angles, and the air suspension allows the ride height to be raised for significant ground clearance. Even the battery casing has been hardened, built to withstand extreme off-road forces and protect the vehicle's core components. Early tests of the prototype, including climbing a steep set of steps in 'Rock Crawl' mode, have shown that its capability remains uncanny and effortless.
The Complete Package
The arrival of the fully electric model later in 2026 will complete the Range Rover Sport's powertrain lineup, which already includes diesel, petrol, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. It shares the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform with its siblings, which was designed from the outset to accommodate various powertrain types without compromising structural integrity or performance. Inside, the cabin is largely unchanged, featuring the brand's signature 13.1-inch central touchscreen and a digital driver display with EV-specific information. By preserving its iconic muscular design while integrating a silent, powerful, and highly capable electric powertrain, Land Rover is making a clear statement: the future of the performance SUV is electric, and it doesn't require leaving its rugged heritage behind.
