The appeal is undeniable. A complex problem arises, a difficult email needs composing, or a new concept requires explanation. Our first instinct is increasingly to open an AI chatbot. Within seconds, a coherent, plausible-sounding response appears. This
is the promise of cognitive offloading in action: delegating mental tasks to an external tool to free up our own cognitive resources. In theory, this should leave us with more capacity for higher-level thought. The reality, however, is often the opposite. This habit of immediate delegation short-circuits the essential, sometimes messy, process of thinking for ourselves. We are becoming incredibly efficient at getting answers, but we risk forgetting how to formulate the questions.
What We Skip When We Rush
Critical thinking is not a single event but a process. It involves observing, analysing, inferring, and problem-solving. When we immediately turn to AI, we bypass these crucial steps. We don't spend time wrestling with the problem, defining its parameters, and exploring potential pathways. We jump straight to a solution that we didn't architect. Recent research highlights the danger. A study from MIT found that over-reliance on AI can degrade our ability to spot misinformation, even if it helps in the short term. Participants in some studies felt their skills were improving even as their performance worsened, a testament to the illusion of competence that frictionless AI can create. This isn't just about academic exercises; it's about the real-world risk of producing biased, unoriginal, or simply incorrect work because we accepted the first answer without question.

The popular metaphor for AI is that of a 'co-pilot,' an assistant that helps us navigate complex tasks. The solution is not to abandon these powerful tools, but to change how we interact with them. It begins with a pause. Before opening that chat window, take a moment to frame the problem yourself. What is the core question? What are your initial thoughts or hypotheses? Sketch out a rough outline or a few bullet points. This simple act of pre-thinking fundamentally changes your relationship with the AI. It turns the tool from a substitute for your thinking into a scaffold for it. Use the AI to challenge your assumptions, generate alternative perspectives, or fill in specific gaps—not to do the foundational thinking for you. Studies suggest that using AI after you have already engaged with a problem can actually enhance critical thinking. Treat the AI's output as a first draft from a brilliant but unreliable intern; it's a starting point for your own critical analysis, not the final word.
