A NASA Study Takes Root
The belief that indoor plants can clean the air largely stems from a landmark 1989 NASA study. Researchers, looking for ways to purify air in sealed environments like space stations, placed common houseplants in small, airtight chambers. They then introduced
volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and benzene—chemicals often emitted from furniture, paints, and cleaning products. The study found that certain plants were remarkably effective at removing these pollutants from the sealed chambers. Species like the Peace Lily, Spider Plant, and English Ivy became overnight heroes, and the idea of the “air-purifying plant” was born.
From Lab to Living Room
The catch, however, lies in the difference between a sealed NASA lab chamber and your actual living room. Subsequent analysis of the research has revealed a critical flaw in its popular interpretation: scale. Your home is not an airtight container; it has natural ventilation from opening doors and windows, cracks, and HVAC systems. One comprehensive review concluded that this normal air exchange in a building removes VOCs far more effectively and quickly than a few plants can. To replicate NASA's results in an average home, you would need an impractical number of plants—some calculations estimate anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space. Having a few potted plants simply doesn't have a significant impact on air quality in a typical room.
The Soil's Secret Role
Interestingly, further research suggests that it may not just be the leaves doing the work. Much of the pollutant breakdown observed in the original studies was performed by microorganisms living in the potting soil. These microbes metabolise airborne toxins that are pulled down to the plant's root zone, converting them into substances the plant can use. So, a healthy pot of soil with its bustling microbial community contributes significantly to the purification process seen in lab settings. However, like the plants themselves, the effect of a few pots of soil is negligible in a large, ventilated room.
The Real, Proven Benefits of Greenery
So, should you toss out your beloved houseplants? Absolutely not. While they may not be the powerful air filters we once thought, the benefits of having plants indoors are well-documented and significant. Studies have consistently shown that the presence of greenery can reduce stress, boost mood, and even increase focus and productivity. The simple act of caring for a plant can be therapeutic, providing a sense of purpose and a connection to nature. This concept, known as biophilia, suggests that humans have an innate tendency to seek connections with nature, and bringing plants into our homes and offices satisfies that need, promoting overall well-being.
What Actually Cleans Your Air?
If you are genuinely concerned about indoor air quality, there are far more effective strategies than stocking up on snake plants. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the best approach is a three-tiered one: source control, ventilation, and air cleaning. First, reduce pollutants at the source by choosing low-VOC paints and furniture and ensuring gas appliances are well-maintained. Second, improve ventilation by regularly opening windows and doors, even for just a few minutes a day, and using exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Finally, for a more robust solution, consider using a mechanical air purifier with a HEPA filter, which is designed to capture fine particulate matter, and an activated carbon filter for gases and odours.
