The Perennial Tatkal Scramble
For decades, securing a Tatkal ticket at a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter has been a test of will and endurance. Passengers often queue for hours, sometimes overnight, just for a chance to reach the window when booking opens at 10 AM for AC
classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes. This process is frequently marked by long lines, confusion, and the frustration of watching seats vanish in minutes. The high demand and limited supply create a high-pressure environment, making the experience inefficient and stressful for both passengers and railway staff. It is this long-standing issue of overcrowding and disorder that Indian Railways aims to address with its latest initiative.
Introducing the Counter Token System
Starting from August 1, 2026, in selected railway zones, a new token system is being implemented for offline Tatkal bookings. This change applies exclusively to tickets booked in person at railway reservation counters; the online booking process via the IRCTC website and mobile app remains unchanged. The goal is to make the offline process more organised and transparent by eliminating the need for passengers to stand in long queues for extended periods. Instead of a physical queue determining your chance, a numbered token will now decide your place in the line, fundamentally changing the morning routine for last-minute travellers.
How the New System Works
The new process involves two key time slots. First, passengers must visit the counter during a specific token distribution window, which occurs before the actual booking begins. For AC Tatkal tickets, tokens are distributed from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. For non-AC (Sleeper) class, the window is 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. After collecting a numbered token, passengers can leave and return closer to the booking time. When the Tatkal booking window opens (10 AM for AC, 11 AM for non-AC), passengers are called to the counter according to their token number to complete the transaction. To book, you will still need to present a valid government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, or Passport.
The Real Race: From Booking Window to Token Window
This new system doesn't eliminate the competition for Tatkal tickets; it simply shifts the critical moment. The race is no longer about being at the front of the queue at 10 AM, but about being early enough to secure a low-numbered token during the distribution window. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens—for instance, 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC. This means only the first handful of people who arrive for token collection are likely to get a chance to book. If seats remain after all token-holders have been served, booking will open to walk-in customers on a first-come, first-served basis. The question of the 'correct booking window' now has a new answer: the real window of opportunity is the 30-minute slot when tokens are handed out.
A Fairer System for Families?
To further streamline the process and potentially curb malpractice, some railway divisions have introduced priority categories. 'Category A' tokens are given to those booking for themselves or immediate family members, and these passengers are served first. 'Category B' is for all other requests. This is intended to give genuine passengers and families a better chance. However, the tokens are strictly non-transferable, meaning the person who collects the token must be the one to book the ticket. This rule aims to prevent agents or touts from grabbing tokens and selling them to others.
Will It Solve the Tatkal Problem?
The primary aim of the token system is to improve crowd management and make the booking experience less chaotic. By giving passengers a specific number and turn, it reduces the need to physically hold a spot in a queue for hours. However, the fundamental issue of demand far exceeding the supply of Tatkal tickets remains. While the process at the counter may become more orderly, the underlying scarcity of last-minute confirmed seats is unchanged. The success of this system will depend on its implementation across various stations and its ability to prevent the new token process from being exploited. For now, it represents a significant operational shift that passengers must adapt to.
