What is a Geosynchronous Satellite?
Most Earth observation satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the planet multiple times a day. They get high-resolution pictures, but can only see a specific location for a brief moment as they pass over it. A geosynchronous satellite is
different. It is placed in a very high orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth's equator. At this specific altitude, its orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. This allows it to remain over the same general region of the planet continuously, like a fixed sentinel in the sky. This constant presence over one area is what makes it a game-changer for continuous monitoring.
The Significance of EOS-05
EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, is India’s first operational imaging satellite to be placed in this unique geosynchronous orbit. While ISRO has a large constellation of world-class remote sensing satellites, they are mostly in LEO. The successful launch of EOS-05 is a story of persistence, following a previous unsuccessful attempt in 2021 when a similar satellite, EOS-03, was lost due to a launch vehicle anomaly. This mission's success validates the GSLV Mk-II rocket and its cryogenic upper stage, paving the way for future ambitious projects. Essentially, EOS-05 gives India an observational capability it never had before: the ability to watch over the Indian subcontinent without interruption.
An Unblinking Eye for India
The primary advantage of EOS-05 is its ability to provide near real-time imagery of a large area. The satellite can capture an image of the entire Indian landmass roughly every 30 minutes, and for high-priority areas, it can revisit a target location every five minutes. This 'persistent stare' capability is invaluable. For disaster management, it means authorities can track the development and movement of cyclones, monitor the spread of floods and forest fires, and spot the formation of dangerous cloudbursts as they happen. This allows for faster warnings and more effective coordination of relief efforts on the ground.

The satellite is equipped with advanced multi-spectral and hyperspectral cameras, which capture information beyond what the human eye can see.
