A New High for IIM Bangalore
In the recently released Financial Times (FT) Masters in Management 2026 rankings, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has claimed the top spot among all Indian business schools. The institute's flagship Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP)
is now ranked 21st globally. This represents a significant jump of seven places from its 28th position in 2025 and a steady ascent from 41st in 2024. IIMB is the only Indian school to break into the world's top 25 this year, cementing its position as a leading global institution for management education. This upward trend highlights the growing international reputation and quality of education at one of India's premier B-schools.
How the Rest of India Fared
While IIM Bangalore led the charge, it was a strong year for Indian B-schools overall, with a record 14 institutions making it into the top 100. The headline surprise came from SPJIMR Mumbai, which climbed to 26th place, overtaking IIM Ahmedabad (27th) and IIM Calcutta (39th) to become India's second-highest-ranked school. XLRI Jamshedpur made the most dramatic leap, surging 25 places to land at 33rd. Other notable performances include IIM Kozhikode (54th) and IIM Indore (62nd). Three new institutes entered the rankings: NMIMS Mumbai (73rd), IMT Ghaziabad (86th), and TA Pai Management Institute (98th), broadening India's presence on the global stage.
What Drives the FT Rankings?
The FT rankings are not just a measure of academic reputation; they are heavily driven by graduate outcomes. The methodology uses 19 different criteria, with alumni responses accounting for 56% of the total weight. The single most important factor is the 'weighted salary' of alumni three years after graduation, which carries a 15% weight. Other crucial metrics include salary percentage increase, career progress, value for money, alumni network effectiveness, and international mobility. School-provided data on faculty, diversity, and sustainability initiatives makes up the remaining 44%. This focus on tangible career results is why the rankings are so closely watched by prospective students and recruiters.
IIMB's Winning Formula
IIM Bangalore’s impressive climb is attributed to strong gains in several career-focused areas. The institute saw a significant improvement in its 'Career Progress' rank and a higher 'Weighted Salary' for its graduates. According to IIMB's Director-in-charge, Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, the results testify to the 'transformational value' of an IIMB education and the impact its graduates make globally. The school also saw its 'Careers Service' rank improve to 8th globally, and its 'Alumni Network' rank jumped to 19th from 31st last year, indicating strong institutional support and a powerful community.
The Bigger Picture for India Inc.
The strong performance of 14 Indian B-schools is more than just a matter of institutional pride. It signals the growing calibre of management talent that India is producing. One of the most striking trends in the 2026 ranking is the dominance of Indian schools in salary outcomes. Seven of the top eight highest weighted salaries globally were reported by Indian institutes, with IIM Ahmedabad leading the world on this metric. This demonstrates a high return on investment for students and underscores the premium that the global market places on graduates from India's top management programmes. However, while salaries are high, Indian schools collectively lag in areas like international student intake and course experience, a potential area for future focus.
