An Eye That Never Blinks
Most earth observation satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the globe a few hundred kilometres up. They capture incredibly detailed images but are constantly on the move, meaning they can only see a specific location for a brief period
before returning days later. EOS-05 is different. It operates in a geosynchronous orbit, a special path about 36,000 kilometres high. At this altitude, its orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. This allows it to hover over the Indian subcontinent, providing constant, near real-time coverage of a vast area. Think of it as the difference between a roving patrol car and a permanent watchtower. While India has weather satellites in this type of orbit, EOS-05 is the first one designed specifically for high-resolution imaging from this fixed vantage point.
Redemption After a Setback
The success of EOS-05 is a story of resilience for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This is the agency's second attempt to place such a satellite in orbit. A similar mission in August 2021, known as EOS-03 (or GISAT-1), failed during launch when the GSLV rocket's cryogenic upper stage did not ignite correctly. The loss of the satellite was a significant setback for the programme. After a thorough failure analysis, ISRO implemented corrective measures for its GSLV rocket. The flawless launch of EOS-05 aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket on September 4, 2026, not only broke the 'jinx' but also restored full confidence in the powerful launch vehicle.
What Can This Satellite Actually Do?
The ability to monitor the same region continuously is a game-changer for many applications. For disaster management, EOS-05 can track the rapid development of cyclones, floods, and forest fires, providing crucial data for evacuation and response efforts. In agriculture, it can monitor crop health and vegetation over large areas. From a strategic standpoint, the satellite provides an invaluable tool for national security, allowing for persistent surveillance of borders and areas of interest. ISRO has described the satellite as 'strategic', a term that encompasses everything from security to advanced weather and environmental monitoring.
The Journey to Final Orbit
Launching the satellite is only the first step. The GSLV-F17 rocket placed EOS-05 into a highly elliptical 'transfer orbit'. From there, engineers at ISRO performed a series of complex orbit-raising manoeuvres using the satellite's onboard engines. These controlled burns gradually raised the satellite's altitude and circularised its path. The third and final manoeuvre was successfully completed on September 7, 2026, placing EOS-05 into its final geosynchronous orbit. The satellite is reported to be in normal health, and after a period of system checks, it will begin its mission of observing the Earth from its fixed perch high above the equator.
