A Tale of Two Indias in AI
Recent data from Anthropic, the company behind the AI model Claude, paints a fascinating and complex picture of its adoption in India. On one hand, India accounts for 5.8% of Claude’s total consumer use worldwide, second only to the United States. This
confirms the nation's status as a fast-growing and significant AI user base. However, the story isn't one of uniform, nationwide adoption. When measured on a per-capita basis, India ranks a startling 101st out of 116 countries. This vast difference between total volume and per-person use highlights a key truth: AI adoption in India is currently a story of deep expertise within a narrow, professional slice of the population rather than a broad, consumer-led phenomenon.
The Four States Driving the Boom
The concentration becomes clear when looking at the geography of usage. According to Anthropic’s 'India Country Brief', more than half of all Claude interactions in the country originate from just four states: Maharashtra (15.5%), Tamil Nadu (13.2%), Karnataka (12.7%), and Delhi (10.5%). While the data points to states, it effectively maps to India’s primary economic and technology megacities: Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra; Chennai in Tamil Nadu; Bengaluru in Karnataka; and the National Capital Region (NCR) in Delhi. This pattern suggests that Claude's current user base is almost perfectly aligned with India's established IT and business services geography. Rather than creating new centres of activity, the AI boom is, for now, amplifying the strengths of existing hubs.
Where Code is King
So, what are these professionals using Claude for? Unlike the casual, personal queries that might dominate in other regions, India’s usage is overwhelmingly work-oriented. An incredible 45.2% of all tasks performed on Claude in India are related to software development and other computer-science roles — the highest share of any country analysed. Users are not asking the AI to write poems or plan holidays; they are asking it to write, debug, and modify software. The most common task is modifying existing code to correct errors or improve performance. This focus on core software engineering and technical tutoring directly supports India's massive IT services and export economy. Indian users are leveraging AI as a powerful productivity tool, compressing tasks that would normally take nearly four hours into just fifteen minutes.
The Bengaluru-Karnataka Engine
It is impossible to discuss Indian tech without mentioning Bengaluru, and its home state of Karnataka is a predictable leader in Claude usage. As the nation's undisputed startup capital and a hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs), Bengaluru possesses an unparalleled density of software engineers, AI/ML specialists, and product managers. The city’s tech workforce is often described as 'global-ready,' with a deep-seated culture of leveraging cutting-edge tools to accelerate development cycles. The high adoption of Claude here reflects a workforce constantly seeking a competitive edge, using AI to ship products faster and solve complex engineering challenges. The use-case data from Anthropic strongly suggests that Claude has become an essential co-pilot for the thousands of developers powering the city's innovation ecosystem.
Maharashtra and Beyond
Leading the pack is Maharashtra, home to the financial capital Mumbai and the sprawling tech and automotive hub of Pune. This diverse economic base contributes to its top ranking. While Mumbai's fintech and enterprise sectors are significant drivers, Pune has carved out a niche as a SaaS and engineering powerhouse. Combined with the industrial and corporate might of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai and Delhi-NCR's unique mix of large enterprises and government-adjacent tech initiatives, the data shows a clear trend. AI adoption is flourishing where a critical mass of technical talent and high-value business challenges already exist. These are not just cities with tech offices; they are integrated ecosystems where professional necessity is driving the practical application of AI.
