For the past few years, headlines about the Indian and global tech sectors have been dominated by two themes: the unstoppable rise of AI and waves of job insecurity. It seems counterintuitive, but recent trends suggest that the roles most closely associated
with the AI boom—data scientists and machine learning specialists—are experiencing a higher degree of anxiety about their future than their software engineering counterparts. While layoffs driven by economic restructuring and the pursuit of AI-driven efficiency have shaken the entire industry, a clear divide in sentiment is becoming apparent. Software engineers, the architects of our digital world, seem to be weathering the storm with more assurance, while AI teams navigate a landscape of hype, high pressure, and rapid change.
The Bedrock of a Digital World
The confidence of software engineers stems from the fundamental nature of their work. They build and maintain the digital infrastructure that everything else runs on—from banking apps to e-commerce sites and, yes, even the platforms used to develop AI. For them, AI is largely seen as a powerful new tool, not a replacement. AI coding assistants can automate repetitive tasks, debug code, and accelerate development, but they cannot perform the core functions of engineering: understanding complex business needs, designing robust system architecture, and exercising critical judgment. An AI can write a block of code, but it cannot yet be held accountable for the security, scalability, and ethical implications of a large-scale software project. This perception of AI as a collaborator rather than a competitor allows engineers to feel that their foundational, problem-solving skills remain indispensable.
Anxiety on the AI Frontier
The situation for AI and data science professionals is more complex. Ironically, their job insecurity is fueled by the very technology they work with. Firstly, the AI field is caught in a whirlwind of hype. This creates immense pressure to deliver transformative results, yet many AI projects are experimental and may not yield immediate returns, leading to volatile project funding and team restructuring. Secondly, AI is becoming adept at automating routine data-related tasks, such as data cleaning and basic analysis, which were once key responsibilities for junior data analysts. This raises the bar for entry and puts pressure on specialists to constantly upskill to avoid obsolescence. Finally, there's a psychological component; companies are increasingly citing 'AI' as a reason for layoffs, creating a climate of fear even when the reasons are more about cost-cutting. Those on the AI frontier are the first to see what the technology is capable of, which can lead to a deeper apprehension about its long-term impact on their own roles.
The View from the Indian Tech Hub
In India, these global trends are magnified by the local market dynamics. The Indian IT industry is in the midst of a massive structural transformation, moving away from a model based on a large workforce for services to one that prioritises high-value, specialised skills. This transition creates both immense opportunity and significant anxiety. Reports highlight rising stress and burnout among tech workers concerned about their skills becoming obsolete. For years, a software job in India was seen as a ticket to lifelong stability. That assumption has been challenged. However, the roles that demand deep specialisation, strategic thinking, and the ability to leverage AI as a tool are more resilient. The dividing line is no longer just about knowing how to code, but about being able to solve complex problems that are beyond the scope of current automation.
