A Leap into the Global Top 25
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore has secured the 21st position worldwide in the FT MiM 2026 rankings, a significant jump of seven places from its 28th rank in 2025. This marks a consistent upward trend for the institution, which was ranked 41st
in 2024, and makes it the only Indian business school to break into the global top 25 this year. The ranking solidifies IIM Bangalore's status as a front-runner in management education, not just within India but on an international level. According to a statement from the institute, this achievement is a testament to the transformational value of an IIMB education and the impact its graduates are making globally.
What's Driving the Climb?
The FT rankings are determined by 19 criteria, with significant weight given to alumni feedback on outcomes like salary and career progression. IIM Bangalore showed marked improvement in several of these key areas. The institute saw its Alumni Network Rank jump to 19th from 31st last year, while its Value for Money rank also improved, moving to 65th from 78th. Furthermore, there were strong gains in its Career Progress rank and Careers Service rank. These metrics indicate that alumni feel their degree has provided a strong return on investment and has been instrumental in advancing their careers three years after graduation. The ranking also considers school-provided data on diversity and sustainability, where IIMB also showed progress.
How Other Indian Schools Fared
This year's ranking highlights a strong overall showing for India, with a total of 14 institutions making it into the top 100. While IIM Bangalore leads the pack, other schools also posted impressive results. SPJIMR, Mumbai, climbed to 26th place, notably ahead of IIM Ahmedabad at 27th. XLRI Jamshedpur was one of the biggest movers, soaring 25 spots to land at 33rd. IIM Calcutta secured the 39th position, giving India five institutions in the top 50. Further down, IIMs in Kozhikode (54th), Indore (62nd), Lucknow (72nd), and Udaipur (83rd) also feature prominently, showcasing the depth of quality in Indian management education.
The Global Context
While Indian schools are making impressive strides, the top of the global table continues to be dominated by European institutions. The University of St Gallen in Switzerland retained its number one position for the second year in a row. It was followed by Portugal's Nova School of Business and Economics in second place and China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Antai in third. IIM Bangalore's position at 21st places it ahead of many prestigious international schools, underscoring the world-class education it provides. The strong performance, particularly in salary and career progress, demonstrates that Indian talent is competing effectively on a global scale.
Why This Matters for Students
For current and prospective students, a high FT ranking is more than just a number; it's a globally recognized stamp of approval. It signals to international recruiters that the curriculum, faculty, and student cohort meet a high standard of excellence. This directly translates to better career opportunities, higher salary potential, and a stronger global alumni network. The improved 'Value for Money' rank is particularly crucial, suggesting that the investment in an IIMB education delivers substantial returns. As IIMB's Director-in-charge U Dinesh Kumar noted, the institute benchmarks its curriculum and methods against the world's best to ensure graduates are prepared for complex business challenges.
