Decoding the Data
The headline-grabbing statistic comes from a recent summer trends report by Swiggy, which analyzed order patterns between mid-April and mid-June 2026. The data revealed a massive 38.4% year-on-year increase in demand for coffee and mocha-based beverages,
with orders peaking between 4 PM and 9 PM. Crucially, the report specifies that consumers turned to cold beverages to beat the heat, with coffee and mocha drinks leading this chilled charge. Caffeine-based drinks grew two and a half times faster than the overall cold beverage category, with Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru leading the demand. So, it's not about sipping piping hot cappuccinos in 40-degree weather; it’s about the explosive popularity of their iced counterparts.
The Cafe as a Modern Oasis
One of the simplest explanations for this trend has less to do with the drink itself and more to do with where it's consumed. As Indian cities grapple with increasingly intense heatwaves, air-conditioned cafes have become modern sanctuaries. They offer a refuge from the sweltering afternoon sun, providing a comfortable space for work, socializing, or simply a moment of peace. This makes ordering a beverage—often a specialty coffee—an integral part of the experience. The growth of cafe culture in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities means more people have access to these cool havens, turning a coffee run into a practical way to escape the heat for an hour or two.
A Much-Needed Energy Jolt
Extreme heat often brings on a sense of lethargy and sluggishness. The afternoon slump can feel even more pronounced when temperatures are high, draining both physical and mental energy. For many, caffeine is the perfect antidote. A cold coffee or mocha provides not just a refreshing chill but also a functional boost to power through the rest of the day. This craving for a caffeine kick is a long-standing habit for many, and the weather doesn't change the body's call for it. Instead, consumers are simply adapting the format, swapping their traditional hot cup for a tall glass of cold brew or an iced latte.
The Unstoppable Rise of Cold Coffee
The 38.4% jump is clear evidence that India's coffee landscape is evolving rapidly. While filter coffee and instant hot coffee have long been staples, a new generation of consumers is embracing international trends, particularly cold coffee formats. The Indian cold brew market, valued at over USD 67 million in 2025, is projected to grow at a staggering rate of over 18% annually. Another report from April 2026 noted a nearly 700% rise in cold coffee orders on quick-commerce platform Instamart. Brands are responding with ready-to-drink (RTD) bottled cold coffees, and cafes are expanding their menus with options like cold brew, nitro coffee, and various flavored Frappuccinos, which are proving immensely popular with younger, urban audiences.
Hot Drinks in Hot Weather?
While the recent surge is dominated by cold coffee, the age-old practice of drinking hot beverages like chai in the summer shouldn't be dismissed. There is a scientific reason for this tradition, which is common in India and other hot climates. Drinking a hot beverage raises your core body temperature, which triggers your body's primary cooling mechanism: sweating. As the sweat evaporates from your skin, it provides a powerful cooling effect. This works best in dry heat where evaporation is efficient. So, while a hot masala chai might seem counterintuitive, it's a time-tested method of telling your body to cool itself down from the inside out.
