A Queen's Devotion
The story begins with the beautiful Queen Veeravati, the adored only sister of seven brothers. Celebrating her first Karwa Chauth after her wedding at her parents' home, she undertook the traditional nirjala vrat, a strict fast without food or water from
sunrise. As the day wore on, the strain of the fast took its toll. Overcome with hunger and thirst, Veeravati grew weak and eagerly awaited the moonrise, which would signal the end of her day-long observance.
An Act of Love, A Grave Mistake
Seeing their beloved sister in distress, her seven brothers could not bear her suffering. Out of love, they devised a plan to trick her into breaking her fast early. They created an illusion of a moon, either by holding a mirror behind a pipal tree or by lighting a fire on a distant hill, and convinced their sister that the moon had risen. Trusting them, Veeravati broke her fast. The moment she took her first bite of food, she received the devastating news that her husband, the king, had died.
The Consequence and a Divine Encounter
Heartbroken and filled with regret, Veeravati rushed towards her husband's kingdom. On her journey, she encountered Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (in some versions, the goddess Indrani). She tearfully explained her plight, and the Goddess revealed the truth: her husband's demise was the direct result of breaking her fast before sighting the true moon. Her brothers' deception, though well-intentioned, had led to this tragedy.
The Path to Redemption
Taking pity on the grieving queen, Goddess Parvati offered her a path to redemption. She instructed Veeravati that to revive her husband, she must observe the Karwa Chauth fast again, but this time with unwavering devotion and strict adherence to all the rituals. In some versions of the tale, she is told to observe fasts for an entire year. In another, Parvati gives the queen a few drops of her own holy blood and instructs her on the proper rituals. Veeravati's unwavering faith was her only hope.
A Testament to Faith
Veeravati followed the divine instructions with absolute faith. She undertook the fasts meticulously and prayed with all her heart. Through her steadfast devotion, the power of her penance reached the gods, and Yama, the god of death, was compelled to restore her husband's life. When the king awoke as if from a deep sleep, their happiness was restored, all thanks to Veeravati’s resilience and the sacred power of the fast she observed.
