The Four AI Hotspots
According to Anthropic's latest Economic Index report, India has rapidly become the second-largest market for its Claude AI in terms of total usage, trailing only the United States. However, a closer look at the data reveals a significant concentration
of activity. Over half of all Claude usage in the country originates from just four key states and territories: Maharashtra (15.5%), Tamil Nadu (13.2%), Karnataka (12.7%), and Delhi (10.5%). Together, these four account for more than 51% of India's interactions with the AI model. This finding suggests that while India as a whole is a massive user base, accounting for 5.8% of global activity, adoption is currently being driven by specific regional powerhouses. The data paints a picture not of widespread, casual use, but of a deep and focused adoption within the nation's economic nerve centres.
Following the Money and Tech
The clustering of Claude users is not a coincidence. The four leading regions are home to India's most prominent technology and business hubs, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and the Delhi NCR. This geographical pattern strongly suggests that the current wave of AI adoption is an extension of India's established IT and services industry. The users are not a broad cross-section of the population but are primarily technology professionals who are integrating AI into their existing workflows. This explains why, despite its number two ranking in total volume, India places 101st globally in per-capita AI usage. The high overall number is a function of India's large population, but the reality on the ground is that AI is currently a tool for a specific, highly skilled segment of the workforce concentrated in these urban centres.
A Nation of Coders
The report also sheds light on what these users are doing with AI. Unlike global patterns that might show more personal or casual use, Indians are overwhelmingly using Claude for professional tasks. A staggering 45.2% of all tasks in India are software-related, the highest share of any country in the world, placing it ahead of Vietnam and Egypt. Activities like writing and debugging code, software development, and technical learning dominate the interactions. This professional focus is also reflected in the productivity gains seen by Indian users, who achieve an average 15x speedup on tasks—compressing nearly four hours of work into just 15 minutes—compared to the global average of 12x. Indian users also appear to trust the AI more, delegating higher levels of autonomy to the model than their global counterparts.
The Next Frontier for AI in India
While this concentration highlights the strength of India's tech corridors, it also points to a significant opportunity and challenge: broadening the base of AI users. For companies like Anthropic, the immediate success within the IT sector is a strong foothold. However, the true economic and social transformation promised by AI will only be realised when these tools become accessible and useful to a much wider audience across the country. The current usage patterns underscore a digital divide, not just in access but in application. The next phase of AI growth in India will involve moving beyond coding and IT services to cater to the nation's diverse linguistic, educational, and professional landscape. The journey from being a tool for tech hubs to a utility for all of India is the next great challenge for the AI industry.
