A Nationwide Effort to Ease Travel
Indian Railways has announced the operation of hundreds of festival special trains across its network to accommodate the surge in passenger traffic for Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja in October and November 2026. This proactive measure
aims to provide comfortable and convenient travel options for people journeying to their hometowns to celebrate with family. Various railway zones, including Northern, Central, Southern, and East Coast Railway, have scheduled these additional services, creating a comprehensive plan to manage one of the busiest travel periods of the year. For instance, Central Railway alone is set to run 418 special services, while Northern Railway is focusing on high-demand routes connecting the national capital with cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Connecting Major Cities and Hometowns
The special trains will connect major metropolitan hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Bengaluru with numerous destinations across the country. Key routes have been identified based on historical demand, ensuring better connectivity where it's needed most. Some of the notable services announced include trains between Varanasi and Delhi, Ayodhya and Anand Vihar, and Chandigarh and Patna. Western and Central Railways have introduced services connecting Mumbai with cities like Chennai, Latur, and Gorakhpur. In the east, special trains will operate on routes such as Puri-Santragachi and Shalimar-Khurda Road, catering to the festive rush in West Bengal and Odisha. These services are scheduled to make numerous trips throughout the festive period, running on specific days of the week to maximize availability.
Key Dates and Timings
Most of these special services are slated to run from early October through the end of November 2026. For example, the Varanasi-Delhi Festival Special Express (04209/04210) will operate multiple days a week from October 2 to November 27. Similarly, services from Mumbai to various destinations are scheduled to run throughout October and November, with some extensions going until November 27. The railways have released detailed timetables for these trains, and passengers are advised to check the specific schedules for services on their intended routes. This advance planning allows travelers to coordinate their journeys with the festival dates, with Diwali falling on November 8, 2026.
How to Book Your Festive Journey
Booking for these festival special trains has already commenced, with reservation windows opening on dates like September 27 and 29, 2026. Passengers can book their tickets through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Additionally, bookings are available at all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. It is important to note that these special trains often run with 'special charges,' meaning fares may be slightly higher than usual. Given the high demand, railway authorities have urged passengers to book their tickets well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles and secure confirmed berths.
More Than Just Tickets
Beyond just adding more trains, Indian Railways is also focusing on ensuring a smooth and safe travel experience. Enhanced crowd management measures are being implemented at major stations to handle the influx of passengers. To bolster security, additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel will be deployed at key stations, platforms, and entry points.
