The Morning Smoothie Boost
One of the simplest ways to use flaxseed is by blending it into a smoothie. Grinding the seeds first makes the nutrients more accessible to your body and creates a smoother texture. For a quick breakfast, combine one ripe banana, one cup of milk (dairy
or almond), one tablespoon of ground flaxseed, and a tablespoon of a nut butter like almond or cashew in a blender. Blend until smooth. The banana provides sweetness, while the nut butter and flaxseed add creaminess and healthy fats, keeping you full and energised through the morning. You won't even notice the flaxseed, but your body will thank you.
Wholesome Flaxseed Roti
Give your daily chapati a nutritional upgrade by adding flaxseed meal. Simply mix ground flaxseed into your regular whole wheat atta before kneading. A good starting ratio is about half a cup of flaxseed meal for every two cups of whole wheat flour. You can also add other flours like ragi or oats for a multi-grain version. Knead the dough with warm water and a pinch of salt until it's soft and smooth, then let it rest for about 15-20 minutes. Roll out the rotis and cook them on a hot tawa as you normally would. They will have a slightly nuttier, richer flavour and provide an excellent dose of fibre with your lunch or dinner.
Spicy Flaxseed Chutney Powder
Known as 'Jawas Chutney' in Maharashtra or 'Alsi Podi' in the south, a dry flaxseed chutney powder is a versatile and flavourful condiment. To make it, dry roast one cup of flaxseeds in a pan until they start to pop and release a nutty aroma. In the same pan, roast a handful of dried red chillies, a dozen cloves of garlic, and a teaspoon of cumin seeds. Let all the ingredients cool completely. Then, grind everything together with salt to create a coarse, spicy powder. This chutney can be stored in an airtight container for weeks and is delicious mixed with hot rice and ghee, sprinkled over yoghurt, or served alongside idli, dosa, or bhakri.
A Hearty Oatmeal Upgrade
Transform your morning bowl of oatmeal into a more filling and nutrient-dense meal. After cooking your oats, simply stir in a tablespoon of ground flaxseed. The flaxseed meal thickens the porridge and adds a creamy texture, along with a significant boost of fibre and omega-3 fatty acids. For extra flavour and crunch, top your oatmeal with fresh fruit, nuts, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. It’s an effortless way to enhance a simple breakfast. The combination of oats and flaxseed is particularly good for heart health and can help manage cholesterol levels.
No-Bake Energy Ladoos
For a healthy snack that satisfies your sweet tooth, try making flaxseed energy balls or 'alsi ke ladoo'. These require no baking and are easy to prepare. Start by roasting about a cup of flaxseeds and grinding them into a coarse powder. In a pan, melt about one cup of chopped jaggery with a little ghee or water to create a syrup. To this, add the ground flaxseed, half a cup of roasted oats, and a mix of chopped nuts like almonds and peanuts. Some recipes also include grated dried coconut and sesame seeds. Mix everything well, and while the mixture is still warm, roll it into small, bite-sized ladoos. These dense, chewy snacks are perfect for a quick energy boost.
