Recent data from Anthropic's Economic Index reveals that India accounts for between 5.8% and 7.2% of all Claude conversations globally. This firmly places it in the number two spot worldwide, a staggering statistic that speaks to the country's immense
scale. However, the headline number masks a more complex reality. When adjusted for its working-age population, India's per-capita usage ranking plummets to 101st out of 116 countries. This discrepancy is at the heart of the story: India's AI boom is not yet about the average person using Claude for daily tasks. Instead, it's being driven by a highly concentrated, technically proficient, and professionally focused user base that is leveraging the technology at an astonishingly high level.
A Nation of Professional Users
So, who is driving this intense usage? The evidence points overwhelmingly to India's massive technology workforce. Over half of the country's Claude activity originates from just four states: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Delhi, which are home to the major IT and startup hubs of Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and the Delhi NCR region. Unlike in many Western markets where AI is often used for creative writing or personal planning, Indian users are applying Claude to their jobs. A remarkable 45.2% of all tasks are software-related, the highest share anywhere in the world. This user base is not just dabbling; they are deeply integrating AI into professional workflows, using it for complex coding, debugging, and software development tasks that are core to India's trillion-dollar IT services industry.
Why Claude Resonates with Indian Developers
Claude's specific capabilities appear to be a perfect match for the needs of Indian professionals. Developers and AI engineers praise the model for its large context window, which allows it to understand and work across extensive codebases without losing track of details—a common frustration with other models. Furthermore, its strong reasoning abilities and the production-ready quality of its code outputs mean less time spent on refactoring and correcting errors. This focus on professional utility is reflected in the data: work-related tasks make up 51.3% of use in India, compared to a global average of 46%. Personal use, conversely, is significantly lower than the global norm, underscoring that for now, Claude in India is primarily a workhorse, not a toy.
Pushing the Boundaries of Productivity
Indian users are not just using AI; they are pushing it to its limits and extracting incredible value. On average, a task that would take an Indian user 3.8 hours without AI can be completed in just under 15 minutes with Claude. This represents a 15-fold productivity increase, significantly higher than the 12x speed-up seen globally. This suggests that users in India are bringing more complex and time-consuming problems to the AI. Further data shows Indian users are more likely to use AI for tasks they could not easily complete on their own and exhibit a higher level of trust, granting the AI more autonomy to make decisions and generate solutions independently. In essence, AI is not just making work faster—it's expanding the capabilities of the Indian workforce.
