What Exactly Is a Tandem Flight?
A tandem paragliding flight is the simplest way to experience the sport. You fly with a professional pilot, securely strapped into a comfortable harness in front of them. The pilot handles all the technical aspects, from takeoff and navigation to landing,
leaving you free to enjoy the incredible views. No prior experience or special license is required. Your only job is to follow a few simple instructions, most importantly jogging a few steps during takeoff to help the wing inflate and lift you gently into the air.
Your Pilot Is a Highly Trained Professional
The person you fly with isn't just a hobbyist; they are a certified professional. In France, paragliding is governed by the French Federation of Free Flight (FFVL), which enforces rigorous standards. To become a professional tandem instructor, a pilot must first gain years of solo flying experience and obtain an advanced pilot certificate. They then undergo an 18-month state-certified training program called the DEJEPS, which covers meteorology, flight mechanics, teaching methods, and emergency risk management. This ensures that the pilot in control of your flight is an expert dedicated to your safety.
Iconic Locations for Your First Flight
The French Alps offer some of the most spectacular paragliding sites in the world. Two locations are particularly famous for beginners. Annecy is often called the most popular tandem site in Europe, with pilots launching from the Col de la Forclaz to soar over the stunning turquoise lake below. The area's reliable weather and thermal conditions make it ideal for first-timers. For a more dramatic, high-mountain experience, Chamonix is unparalleled. Here, you can fly with the magnificent Mont Blanc massif as your backdrop, taking off from accessible points like Planpraz, which is reached by a gondola. Both locations offer a unique and unforgettable perspective of the Alps.
From Takeoff to Landing: What to Expect
The experience is often described as more serene than scary. Most flights begin by meeting your pilot and taking a scenic gondola ride to the launch site. After a safety briefing and getting fitted into your harness, the moment arrives. On your pilot’s command, you will run a few steps down a gentle, grassy slope. There is no jumping off a cliff; the wing simply catches the air and lifts you smoothly off your feet. Once airborne, the sensation is one of peaceful floating. A typical flight lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the weather conditions. Many pilots will offer the option of gentle acrobatic manoeuvres like spirals and wingovers for a bit of extra excitement before guiding you to a soft landing in a designated field, often conveniently located in or near the town.
Planning Your Alpine Paragliding Adventure
Booking a tandem flight is straightforward, with numerous certified schools operating in popular areas like Annecy and Chamonix. The prime season generally runs from late spring through early autumn, though winter flights are also possible and offer a magical view of the snow-covered landscape. Prices for a standard tandem flight typically range from €90 to €175, varying by location, flight duration, and whether extras like photos and videos are included. It's wise to book a few days in advance, especially during peak season, and to have some flexibility in your schedule, as all flights are dependent on safe weather conditions. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and bring layers, as it can be cooler in the air.
