A State in Transformation
Madhya Pradesh is ambitiously expanding its aviation footprint, aiming to boost tourism, trade, and regional development. The state government is driving a multi-pronged strategy that includes building brand-new airports, expanding existing hubs, and converting
smaller airstrips into fully functional airports. The overarching goal is to place an airport roughly every 150 kilometres across the state, making air travel more accessible for everyone. This initiative, largely powered by the Centre's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, is not just about convenience; it's a strategic push to support religious tourism to places like Ujjain and to facilitate economic growth by improving cargo transport from the landlocked state. Major Upgrades at Gwalior and Jabalpur
Two of the state's key cities, Gwalior and Jabalpur, are at the forefront of this transformation. Gwalior's Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport now boasts a new terminal building that dramatically increases its capacity. The new facility can handle around 1,400 passengers per peak hour, a significant jump from the past, and serves as a modern gateway for a city rich in heritage. The inauguration of flights from Rewa has drastically cut travel times to the state capital and other hubs. Furthermore, airports in Datia and Satna have also started operations, offering new travel options for pilgrims and business travellers. Looking ahead, the government has even bigger plans, with a greenfield airport proposed for Shivpuri and ten existing airstrips slated for conversion into airports in phases. The first phase of this conversion will focus on Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Mandla, promising to bring air connectivity to even more remote parts of the state.
Spotlight on Ujjain's Future Airport
A key project on the horizon is the new greenfield airport near Ujjain. Timed for completion before the major Simhastha festival in 2028, this airport is a strategic development designed to handle the massive influx of pilgrims and boost religious tourism. Located near the existing Datana-Matana airstrip, the project is planned to complement, not compete with, Indore's busy airport. This will create a dual-airport system for the region, distributing passenger traffic and providing more direct access to one of India's most sacred cities. Access to the Bundelkhand region is enhanced with the upgraded Gwalior airport and the new Datia airport.
