Understanding the New Visa-Free Policy
In a significant move to boost tourism and strengthen ties, Uzbekistan has announced a visa-free regime for Indian citizens for stays of up to 30 days. This policy, announced in late August 2026, marks a major shift from the previous requirement where
Indians had to apply for an e-visa. The initiative is part of a broader Tourism Cooperation Programme between the two nations, designed to simplify travel for tourism, family visits, and short business trips. While the announcement has been made at the highest levels of government, travellers are advised to check for the official implementation date and specific rules with the Embassy of Uzbekistan before making non-refundable bookings.
Conditional Visa-Free Entry Is Now Active
While a broad visa-free rule for all Indian citizens is being finalised, a conditional visa-free entry has already been activated as of September 1, 2026. Indian citizens who hold a valid, multiple-entry visa for countries like the USA, UK, Schengen Area, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, or the Republic of Korea can enter Uzbekistan without a visa for 30 days. To be eligible for this specific provision, you must also possess a confirmed air ticket for your return journey to India or an onward journey to a third country. This offers a fantastic immediate opportunity for many globetrotting Indians to add Uzbekistan to their travel list without extra visa paperwork.
The Reliable E-Visa Option
For those who do not qualify for the conditional visa-free entry, or until the general policy is fully rolled out, the existing e-visa system remains an excellent and straightforward option. Indian citizens can apply for a tourist e-visa online through the official government portal (e-visa.gov.uz). The process involves filling out a form, uploading a passport copy and a photograph, and paying a fee of around $20 USD. Applications should be submitted at least three working days before your planned travel date. This system has proven reliable and allows for a stay of up to 30 days, ensuring no travel plans need to be put on hold.
Crucial: Don't Forget to Register
Regardless of your visa status—be it visa-free or e-visa—all foreign nationals must register their stay with local authorities. This is a mandatory requirement. Registration must be completed within 72 hours (three working days) of your arrival in Uzbekistan. If you are staying in a licensed hotel, the hotel administration will handle this registration for you automatically at check-in, often providing a small registration slip or QR code as proof. If you are staying in a private home or apartment, you or your host must complete the registration online via the Emehmon portal. It is vital to keep these registration slips for each city you visit, as they may be checked upon departure.
