Unpacking the 'At-Risk' Sentiment
A recent survey by workplace community platform Blind of over 1,500 professionals in India found that a significant majority of engineers, 58%, have an "at-risk" sentiment about their employment. This doesn't necessarily mean they expect to be laid off
tomorrow. Rather, it reflects a broader sense of instability and uncertainty that has crept into a profession once seen as a guaranteed ticket to a secure future. Interestingly, while the 58% figure is high, engineers were actually less concerned than their peers in other tech roles. For instance, the same survey found 66% of AI and machine learning specialists and 68% of sales and marketing professionals felt at risk, suggesting the anxiety is widespread across the tech sector. Only 24% of engineers believed a job cut was "very likely," the lowest of any group surveyed, indicating the risk feels more like a persistent, low-level hum than an immediate alarm.
The Long Shadow of Tech Layoffs
The most obvious factor contributing to this unease is the recent wave of layoffs that has swept through the global and Indian tech industries. Major IT firms have trimmed their workforces, and the widespread media coverage of these events has created a ripple effect of anxiety. Even those in seemingly secure positions are looking over their shoulders, wondering if their role might be next. This climate has shattered the long-held belief that a job at a major tech company is a job for life. The practice of reducing graduate-level hiring, as reported by firms like TCS and Infosys, further fuels the perception that opportunities are shrinking, not growing. This economic uncertainty creates a backdrop where even the rumour of cutbacks can fuel a sense of professional vulnerability.
The AI Paradox: Threat and Opportunity
Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword for engineers. On one hand, AI tools promise to automate repetitive tasks like debugging and basic coding, potentially freeing up engineers for more creative, high-level problem-solving. On the other hand, this same automation is a source of significant job risk. Indian IT firms have already reduced entry-level hiring by 20-25% as AI takes over tasks previously assigned to fresh graduates. The real threat isn't that AI will replace all engineers, but that it will displace those who do not adapt. The World Economic Forum projects that while millions of jobs will be displaced by 2030, even more will be created. The challenge for today's engineers is to acquire the skills needed for these new roles, such as proficiency in machine learning and data science, to stay on the right side of this technological shift.
The Skills Mismatch
The sense of risk isn't just about a lack of jobs, but a lack of the right skills for the jobs that exist. India produces over 1.5 million engineering graduates annually, but a persistent gap remains between academic curricula and industry demands. Many graduates, even from premier institutions like the IITs, find themselves unprepared for the practical, real-world challenges of a modern tech workplace. Employers are increasingly looking for specialised skills in areas like cloud computing, data analytics, and AI, which many traditional engineering programmes are slow to incorporate. This skills gap creates a paradox: companies struggle to find qualified talent, while many engineers struggle to find employment, leading to a sense of insecurity even for those who are currently employed. The need for continuous upskilling is no longer a suggestion; it's a requirement for survival.
A Shift Towards Contract Work
The nature of employment itself is changing. Companies are increasingly favouring contractual or project-based hiring to maintain a lean workforce and access specialised skills on demand. This trend, accelerated by the rise of the gig economy, offers flexibility but sacrifices the stability and benefits associated with permanent roles. For engineers, this means career paths may become less linear, composed of a series of short-term gigs rather than a long-term tenure at a single company. While contract work can offer higher pay rates and diverse experiences, it also introduces a level of inherent instability. This shift away from traditional employment models is a significant, though subtle, contributor to the feeling of employment risk.
