If you've been on social media lately, you've likely seen it: a Tesla vehicle, seemingly on its own, navigating the famously unpredictable traffic of Gurugram. The video, often filmed from the driver's seat, focuses on the large central touchscreen. On
it, a digital recreation of the world outside unfolds in real-time. The car's software identifies and renders other cars, auto-rickshaws, motorcycles weaving through gaps, and pedestrians stepping into the road. The digital wireframes move with fluid accuracy, mirroring the complex dance of Indian traffic. For many, the conclusion was immediate and exhilarating—fully autonomous cars have finally arrived and are ready to tackle India's toughest driving challenges.
Visualisation, Not Automation
The incredible display on the Tesla's screen is what the company calls its Full Self-Driving (FSD) visualisation. This feature is designed to show the driver what the car's cameras and neural network 'see'. It identifies and classifies objects, predicts their paths, and displays lane markings, traffic lights, and road signs. It’s a stunning feat of computer vision and a powerful way to build driver confidence by making the car's artificial intelligence perceptible to the human eye. However, seeing the world and acting on it are two very different things. The visualisation is a representation of the car's perception, not necessarily its autonomous capability. The system can 'see' an auto-rickshaw and label it correctly, but that doesn't automatically mean it is ready to navigate around it safely without human supervision.
What Is 'Full Self-Driving' Anyway?

It is not a fully autonomous system where the driver can turn their attention away. Tesla explicitly warns that drivers must remain alert and ready to take control at any moment. While the system can perform complex tasks like navigating city streets, making turns, and changing lanes, it requires constant human oversight. Think of it as an extremely advanced cruise control that can handle much more than just highway driving. The technology is constantly learning, but its capabilities are often misconstrued by its ambitious branding.
The Reality for Tesla in India
The viral Gurugram clip is particularly interesting because Tesla's FSD is not yet officially launched or approved for widespread use in India. While the company has started hiring vehicle operators to collect road data in cities like Mumbai and New Delhi, and has indicated it is seeking regulatory approval, the full suite of FSD features is not active for Indian customers. Vehicles sold in India may have the hardware and even offer FSD as a future purchase, but the functionality is limited until the government gives the green light. The car in the video is likely a private import, running software that, while able to visualise the environment, isn't yet trained or sanctioned for the unique challenges of Indian roads. In fact, reports from mid-2026 note that only automatic parking functions are enabled in India while broader FSD capabilities await regulatory sign-off.

So, if it’s not true self-driving, what's the point? The visualisation is one of Tesla's most powerful marketing tools. It demystifies the 'black box' of AI, giving drivers a sense of trust and understanding. Seeing the car recognise a pedestrian before you do makes you believe in its potential. Tesla is actively working to improve these visualisations for international markets, adding region-specific vehicle models (like European cab-over trucks) to make the experience more intuitive and build trust with both customers and regulators. The Gurugram video does exactly that—it showcases the raw potential of the system's perception capabilities, even if the decision-making part isn't ready for prime time.
