What Makes EOS-05 a Landmark Mission?
On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 satellite aboard its powerful GSLV-F17 rocket. While India has a large constellation of Earth observation satellites, most operate in Low Earth Orbit
(LEO), meaning they circle the globe rapidly and can only view a specific location for a few minutes at a time. EOS-05 is fundamentally different. It is India's first successful imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, some 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. This success is particularly significant after a previous attempt to place a similar satellite, EOS-03, failed during launch in 2021, making the successful deployment of EOS-05 a moment of triumph and relief for the agency.
The Geosynchronous Advantage: A Constant Watch
The key to EOS-05's power lies in its orbit. A geosynchronous orbit's period matches the Earth's rotation. From this high vantage point, the satellite remains positioned over the same broad region—in this case, the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding oceans. Think of the difference between a high-speed drone capturing fleeting glimpses of the ground versus a stationary security camera providing a constant, unwavering view. While LEO satellites provide high-resolution snapshots, EOS-05 delivers persistent monitoring. This allows it to track developing situations, like a cyclone moving towards the coast or a forest fire spreading, in near real-time.
