The Ranking: An Indian Island on the World Stage
A new global study has officially placed one of India's own among the world's most tranquil destinations. Swaraj Dweep, popularly known as Havelock Island, in the Andamans secured the ninth spot in the 2026 'Unspoilt Index' by BookRetreats.com. This ranking
assessed 100 islands worldwide on factors like naturalness, population density, light pollution, and main-road density to quantify peace and quiet. The recognition confirms what many travellers have long known: India holds keys to some truly peaceful escapes. While this was the only Indian island on that specific global list, a broader consensus among travel experts points to several other idyllic island getaways across the country perfect for disconnecting and recharging.
1. Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), Andamans
It’s no surprise that Swaraj Dweep made the global top ten. Famed for the stunning Radhanagar Beach, often cited as one of Asia's best, the island strikes a perfect balance between pristine nature and accessible comfort. Much of the island is covered by lush tropical forest, offering a serene backdrop to its white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters. While it is a popular destination, its size and remote location help preserve a sense of calm. Beyond sunbathing, visitors can engage in quiet activities like kayaking through mangroves or snorkelling at Elephant Beach, which remains relatively secluded.
2. Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island), Andamans
Often described as Havelock's quieter sibling, Shaheed Dweep offers a more laid-back and slow-paced vibe. The island is smaller, with a rustic charm characterized by lush green paddy fields, fruit plantations, and quiet, winding roads. Its beaches, like Laxmanpur Beach, are famous for their spectacular sunset views and unique natural rock formations. Bharatpur Beach offers calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming and viewing coral with no need for a boat. It's the ideal destination for travellers who want the beauty of the Andamans with fewer crowds and a more intimate connection to nature.
3. Bangaram Atoll, Lakshadweep
For those seeking true seclusion, Bangaram Island in Lakshadweep is an unparalleled paradise. This uninhabited teardrop-shaped island is known for its pristine coral reefs and stunningly clear lagoons. With only one resort operating for tourists, it guarantees an exclusive and peaceful experience. The island is a sanctuary for marine life, making it a dream for snorkellers and divers. At night, its shores sometimes glow with bioluminescent plankton, creating a magical atmosphere. With no internet and minimal noise, Bangaram offers a genuine escape from modern life, focusing purely on natural beauty and relaxation.
4. Divar Island, Goa
Peace is not always found on a remote ocean coast. Nestled in the Mandovi River, a short ferry ride from Old Goa, Divar Island offers a different kind of tranquility. It's a world away from Goa's bustling beach party scene. Here, time slows down among scenic paddy fields, dense forests, and charming old Portuguese-style villas. With no crowded markets or heavy traffic, the island's narrow, winding roads are perfect for a leisurely cycle or stroll. Divar provides a serene, countryside experience, rich with history and a quiet charm that feels deeply connected to Goa's past.
5. St. Mary's Islands, Karnataka
A unique geological wonder, St. Mary's Islands off the coast of Malpe in Udupi are a testament to nature's artistry. The islands are famous for their distinctive hexagonal basaltic rock formations, a rare sight formed by ancient volcanic activity. These rock columns create a dramatic landscape against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea. The islands are uninhabited and can only be visited during the day via a ferry, which helps preserve their pristine condition. The beaches here aren't typical soft sand, but are covered in countless shells. It's an ideal spot for a day trip focused on photography, quiet exploration, and marvelling at a unique natural phenomenon.
