According to Anthropic's Economic Index, which analyzed usage of its Claude AI model, India is a standout nation for AI adoption. The country ranks second only to the United States in total usage, accounting for 5.8% of global activity. More impressively,
Indian users are leveraging AI for significant productivity gains. The report found that Indians complete tasks with AI in about 15 minutes that would otherwise take nearly four hours, representing a 15x speedup. This outpaces the global average, where users see a 12x speedup. This increased efficiency is largely driven by a focus on professional tasks. Over half (51.3%) of AI use in India is work-related, compared to a global average of 46%.
The Concentration Problem
Despite the impressive top-line numbers, the data reveals a stark concentration. When measured on a per-capita basis, India's rank plummets to 101st out of 116 countries. This gap highlights that while absolute usage is high due to India's large population, widespread adoption is still low. The benefits of AI are clustering in specific geographies and industries. Over half of the nation's AI activity originates from just four states: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Delhi. This mirrors the concentration of India's established IT and technology hubs in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, and the National Capital Region.
Tech Professionals Lead the Charge
The concentration is not just geographic but also professional. The data shows that AI use in India is overwhelmingly dominated by the tech sector. India ranks first globally in the share of AI use devoted to software-related tasks, at 45.2%. Activities like coding, software development, and debugging are primary use cases, reflecting the country's status as a major IT services exporter. While students are also a significant user group, with coursework and homework accounting for a substantial portion of interactions, the overall profile is that of a technically skilled user base in the professional services sector. Personal use, on the other hand, is lower than the global average, reinforcing the work-oriented nature of AI adoption in the country.
The Risk of a New Digital Divide
This lopsided adoption pattern presents a critical challenge. If the productivity benefits of AI are confined to urban tech corridors and large enterprises, it could exacerbate existing economic inequalities. Small and medium-sized businesses, rural communities, and workers in non-tech sectors risk being left behind, creating a two-speed economy. Anthropic's report suggests that without addressing structural barriers related to digital infrastructure, income levels, and broader AI awareness, adoption will likely remain concentrated. The very technology that holds immense promise for boosting national productivity could inadvertently widen the gap between the country's digital haves and have-nots.
Pathways to Broader Adoption
Recognizing this challenge is the first step toward addressing it. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, has noted the 'incredible' energy in India's AI ecosystem and urged the country to use the technology to make governance more efficient and citizen-centric. Expanding AI's reach will require concerted efforts from both the government and the private sector. Initiatives focused on digital literacy, providing AI access in regional languages, and developing use cases relevant to sectors like agriculture and healthcare are crucial. For India to truly realize its potential as an AI powerhouse, the focus must shift from celebrating pockets of high productivity to fostering a more inclusive and widespread digital transformation.
