Beyond the Hype: Augmentation Over Replacement
Recent analyses suggest that for India's workforce, Generative AI is more likely to be a co-pilot than a replacement. A July 2026 report from Goldman Sachs estimates that while 8-12% of India's non-agricultural jobs face a risk of being substituted, a much
larger share—between 42% and 48%—is likely to be complemented by AI. This means for nearly half the workforce, AI will serve as a powerful tool to automate routine duties, freeing up employees to focus on tasks that require critical thinking, creativity, and human interaction. This shift from substitution to augmentation is crucial. It suggests a future focused on reorganizing work and boosting productivity rather than outright job destruction. The report projects that this could lift India's annual labour productivity growth by about 0.4 percentage points over the next decade.
The Education and Skills Divide
The opportunities and risks of AI will not be distributed equally; they will be closely tied to a worker's education and skill level. Knowledge-intensive sectors like healthcare, education, and financial services are expected to benefit most from AI-powered augmentation. For instance, AI can assist doctors with diagnostics or help financial analysts with basic data modeling, enhancing their efficiency and capabilities. Workers in these roles, who typically possess higher education and complex problem-solving skills, are better positioned to leverage AI as a tool. Conversely, jobs characterized by repetitive, codifiable tasks face a higher risk of automation. This includes roles in routine clerical support, back-office financial functions, and certain business process services. The emphasis is shifting towards what is being called 'hybrid talent'—professionals who can combine technical fluency with creativity and critical judgment.
An Uneven Impact Across Industries
Just as with education, the industry a person works in will significantly determine their experience with Generative AI. The technology's exposure is heavily concentrated in the services sector. Knowledge-based fields like media, professional services, and education stand to gain significant productivity boosts. However, within services, industries like IT-enabled business process services (BPS), postal services, and telecom face a greater substitution threat due to their reliance on repeatable processes. In contrast, sectors that rely heavily on physical labour, such as construction, manufacturing, and mining, are less directly exposed to automation from Generative AI. While AI can still drive efficiencies in these areas through better resource management, the core manual and physical tasks remain difficult for current AI models to automate.
It’s About Tasks, Not Just Jobs
A more granular way to understand AI's impact is to look at the mix of tasks within a job, rather than the job title itself. It's estimated that Generative AI could perform between 9% and 17% of the tasks currently carried out by India’s non-agricultural workforce. This distinction is key: AI automates specific tasks, not entire professions. For many, this will mean a change in their day-to-day responsibilities. Time previously spent on data processing, documentation, or writing routine reports can be reallocated to higher-value activities like strategy, client interaction, and complex decision-making. This task-based disruption is already prompting professionals to rethink their career paths. According to one survey, a majority of Indian professionals are planning to upskill in the next year to adapt to this new reality, with AI proficiency seen as a critical future skill.
